For those of you who have read all of the other cryptic hints and are still puzzled, I guess I'll throw in a HUGE, HUGE hint:

thanks Eytanz
there is no way I would have ever tried that

koro it is not a conspiracy
your calculation is 100% correct
however there is one combination of orbs which lets you do what you have to do
with the secret
the only room I found hard was the wraithwings

I got it!
pretty soon after I posted that last post, too! At least I was able to recycle my program to figure out 8S in half a second. By the way, your hints all sound good to you, but they didn't help me in the least. I don't know. I think the stumped people think on a different wavelength. I understood what everyone was saying in their hints but not the relevance. So... everyone, keep at it. You will prefer to not be directly told. Read the Gospel of Thomas verse 18 for an obscure hint, and yes it is most definitely a conspiracy.
Koro

Edit PS added I still am having trouble with S9.
PPS Nevermind, I'm done and good riddance. Actually, those were some genious rooms. I was actually playing around with a similar concept in one of my holds, and it is sort of used in Clathro Tower too. Very cool work.

Okay, I've read everything, tried everything, sent a PM to Eytan, and I still don't get it. Demo, someone?

I'm down to the Wraithwing room... can't believe I didn't see what to do with those mimics earlier... anyway, I just broke in to the main chamber, and I have to say I'm very impressed with this hold. May I suggest it be promoted to the Holds forum?

Edit: was anyone else able to kill all the serpents in Quarce South before activating the second mimic?

If I get some time I'd like to see if I can add some more rooms. I also changed the entrance and the goblin room slightly, but figured it isn't worth uploading a new version yet.

just couldn't find a way to get the last serpent in place to use the second mimic

I had an idea for a room you could add. I don't have a mockup of it right now, but I'm thinking a trapdoor area with a wraithwing, and then two arrows a space apart which provide the only way to kill the wraithwing. If my vague description here sucks as much as I think it does, I'll make the room and email it to you tonight.

I had dismissed The Fool’s Errand as an early April Fool until coming across an ‘impossible’ room in Red Hawk’s Deep Hold (Level 21: 2S, 1E). Knowing his penchant for adopting all the best ideas in DROD (he always gives due credit) I thought that he might have used the famed ‘trick’ here. As it happens he didn’t but a review of the hold resulted in my discovery of the trick. I have to say that the moment I saw the effects of applying this device was almost heart-stopping – my most memorable DROD experience to date.

Apart from the conspiracy all that has been said above is quite true except that some of the posts more than others are intended to deceive. Yes, even nudging the wraithwings – I couldn’t believe it. It should be added that all these effects can be simulated in an ordinary hold but it leaves you wondering just what else remains to be discovered in DROD.

Well The Fool’s Errand has been downloaded 77 times as I write so I would like to offer a further hint to help anyone who is still in the dark. Once you know what to do it is difficult to judge just how much you are giving away so if anyone thinks that the following is too explicit then I will edit it out, I don’t want to spoil things:

I would very much like to see this hold extended (including DiMono’s idea?) for these really are the most ingenious of rooms. Many thanks bibelot and very well done – this has got to be the hold of holds.

One minor negative note: I was more than a bit disappointed when the exit stairs took me back to the beginning again.

Really?

Actually, mine concludes properly, so I'll ask if you're using the current 1.6.5 build of DROD?

In my experience (and probably opinion), the only way to get rid of this bug once it's shown up is to do a full DROD reinstall. That is, once you've gotten this bug with one person's hold, either because of their corruption or yours, then other holds can randomly have their exit stairs remapped. It's always been the case with this bug that people who have the exact same installation can have it happen to one and not the other. To me it seems to be a case of random corruption, probably something that happens during the import process or when DROD shuts down, with memory management or other multi-tasking issues. Of course, I'm just making things up as I go along, but if I don't use any smilies mabye no one will notice.

Game on,

Game on,
I completed Tar Time the other day and it finished properly so the bug wasn’t in DROD but in the individual file: The Fools Errand.

After downloading Fool’s Errand again it played perfectly and I got the end message and access to the editable version: thanks again bibelot.

I must have corrupted the file myself when trying all sorts of things: simultaneous pressing of keys, use of Ctrl + Alt, etc. I should say that, while The Fool’s Errand is an extraordinary hold, the method of play is wholly conventional.

Wow. That's one freaking amazing hold... and even after the trick, 9s is one hella innovative room... and I love the entrance too, seems almost as impossible at first as the others, but a helluva lot easier... certainly starts you out on your toes... get this thing all fixed up and headed towards holds so you can torture people who don't visit the forums... I didn't see it 'til joker's hint...
I got so frustrated by the wraithwings one, because I did figure out how to make 4 survive, I've never feared those, but getting so close on that stage made it even more frustrating... anyway, thanks for a wonderful surprising hold

I don't want to explicitly give the "trick" away, read the clue, READ it, THINK about it... it will be clear, if it's not... well... PM someone... I, personally, will **not** give out the answer on the forum, it's too good... although I guess you could pm me, but this clue should do it if you think hard enough

also Bibelot's last clue... paraphrased...

Heh, Jokers clue probably doesn't work until you beat the entrance, and I can't even do that. I guess my feeble old synapses don't work the same as you young 'uns.

Yeah... the entrance is a challenging stage just to deal with the roaches right there... but it can be done with a little tricky sword dancing... just try different things, there's not that many options you can survive on such a close board... you'll find the one that works soon enough.

before that they were all gibberish
my biggest problem with figuring it out was I found the entrance too easy
got it on the first try
