Dark Blue doors are like green doors with one important aspect: They only open when all of a certain *type* of monster is killed. Blue doors must always have one, and only one, monster on it at the start of a room, and that monster leaves an imprint on it that can be clearly seen. (Of course, it can step off).

I think this would be very useful for parts where you have to clear different sections of a room in order.

I'm rather rushed right now, and I might have forgotten something. Let me know if there's something you think I forgot to say.

Yes. Blue Doors already exist!

Perhaps the fact that we already have blue doors in DROD? You know, the ones that open only when you have cleared all the required rooms in a level?

Game on,

Okay, pick a colour. Green? ;)

I'll change it to Dark Blue.

Lol! That was funny. No offense or anything, Red.

Maybe it should be, say, a grey door.

This is actually something I've been wanting in the game since I started making my hold.

This idea has been thrown around before, and I think it was rejected because there would be too many doors showing up for every monster. However, you have come up with a way to have one door fit all possible monsters.

Except, that is, snakes. Or, perhaps they are covered, I would just like to hear/read how to deal with that.

And if it's a tar baby door, would the mothers need to be killed? How would a mother door be represented?

You could possibly represten the door with something other than just a color. I.e. a colorless roach for roaches, a set of eyes for tar mothers. The graphic would look similar to the monster it represent but not enought to confuse the player into thinking it just a roach stuck in a door, the body of the roach for the most part would be the same color as the door itself. :P

Serpents would only need a part of it on the door. And tar mothers can be placed on it too. A tar baby/mother door would not need the other to be destroyed also, but if there is normal tar on it all forms of tar would need to be destroyed (otherwise it's the ame as Black Gates in that respect).

It would be much better if you could just arbitrarily set the type of monster to be killed in the editor. The door would look much like a regular door with a raised glyph on the top that looks like the monster to be killed. Dark blue doors that have an associated monster type that doesn't exist in the room should be marked as red in the editor.

I thought of the glyph idea, but I thought it might require too much more coding as they are now completely different. With a monster on top, it's just always the same door with different settings. Besides, how much space would that take up in the editor?

They could probably work it so that there is a Dark Blue Wall in the walls area (Which will probably have smaller icons soon), and then making putting a monster on the wall make the glyph.

I think maybe linking the wall to a critter like an orb to a door... that would be pretty cool, but then it might be harder to code the link as a species rather than as a "this door will open when this roach is killed". I might be wrong though.

That would not be a good idea, as the player will have to guess which monster will open which door. A door that opens when all monsters of a kind are killed is fine, but a door that opens only when a particular monster is killed is not. Well, that is, in my opinion.

Crud, you must have mis-interpreted what I said. I don't want a "guess-which-critter-to-kill" thing, I meant that it might be harder to program than linking it to a particular critter. I think that The_Red_Hawk's idea is great unmodified.

That would depend how the architect used it. If there was one goblin where you enter, and several on the other side that you cannot exit or enter the room from, and the door has a gobling on it, then it's clear which goblin opens the door.

Oops. I somehow missed "link as a species" in the post.

It probably won't be too hard to code a "check if all of a type of monster is killed" routine into DROD.

Good. Then we'll probably see this, and also maybe a "Cracked door", coming up. I sure hope so, it'll be REALLY fun to make the release of a certain group of critters dependant on the slaying of another group.... you realize of course that soon enough DROD will be complex enough for us to make holds that make level 25 look like child's play.... MWAHAHAH! I'm looking forward to that!
