I just emailed Caravel games if it's possible to get the original version - but reading this thread now, I guess it might be not possible then?

I prefer the original version, the only thing bad about it is that it looks small on high resolutions and that it doesn't run on Windows 7. But I have an old XP machine which I now use for oldschool gaming, I even have a CRT monitor for it, and I can simply switch to 800x600 if I like, because it's not a productive machine any more. So I'd like to have the full version now, since I only have the old demo, but I played that through a few times :D

Btw, the reasons why I prefer the old version are: the old music, the old "death" sound, and the old face are all better in the original, for my personal taste at least. Also, I have to say I didn't like that voice acting in the newer games, it seemed a bit out of place. But maybe that's different for people who never played the old version :)

Well, the music is freely available here and is compatible with AE. If you have the Webfoot demo, I think you could pretty easily extract the death scream and Beethro portrait and modify AE to use them. That may not be exactly what you're looking for, but it's a pretty close approximation.

That said, it's not that hard to find the full version of Webfoot if you really want it, but no one's going to post it or link to it here.

Hmm, I'm curious as to why it won't work on Windows 7 for you. Because I have a copy of Webfoot DROD that I copied to a disk so I could put it on newer computers, and it worked fine when I ran it on the Windows 7 partition on my MacBook Pro.

It depends if you're running the x86 or x64 build of Windows. Webfoot DROD was a 16-bit app (Windows 3.1 days). 32-bit versions of Windows have the necessary emulation layer to allow it to run, but 16-bit support was dropped from 64-bit versions of Windows.

Yes, I have a 64-bit version of Windows 7. I'm mostly using Linux though, so I could try if it works with Wine :) on the other hand, as I said, my XP machine is better suited for that, because of the monitor resolution :D

Well, the reply I got from Caravel is - as expected - that they don't have the rights for that version and that I should try to contact Webfoot...

Another question: Is the original author of DROD still part of Caravel Games? Maybe I could just ask him personally?

Of course I know that it might be possible to simply find a pirated version of the original somewhere (as someone "hinted"), but my intention was to buy the game from the original guys, because I really like the game, I just prefer the original version ;)

The rights to the original version are still owned by Webfoot Technologies, and they basically have no interest in allowing its distribution.

Erik (the original creator) got permission to do an open source version (which led to Caravel DROD, then Architects' Edition, and so on up to TSS), but that doesn't include distributing Webfoot's stuff.

Maurog's post on the first page of this thread has a few more details.

Actually, archive.org has already archived Webfoot DROD, with the demo freely available to be downloaded.
