I picked TCB because of the anticipation though all 3 have marked me for different reasons.

BTW... It's "Journey to the Rooted Hold" (not Hole).

Actually, it's "Journey to Rooted Hold", no "the".

*wonders idly why this poll has a time limit.

Given that the poll is about the three holds that ship with the game, we can infer that the hold will become meaningless as soon as DROD 4.0 ships. Given that the poll will close in 104 weeks, 2 days, we can set an upper bound on when said DROD 4.0 will be released.

I know, but it just seems odd that only 3% of the community prefers KDD.

I can think of a few reasons:
1) It may not have been played recently by most players
2) JtRH and especially TCB add a huge amount of elements which make the puzzles, if not just "new", then at least "freshly innovative"
3) KDD's layout is rather plain and uses a lot of tricks which, albeit innovative at the time, are now considered a no-go for hold designers (trapdoors under tar, multi room mazes etc)

The latter point means a lot to me. I've lost all my progress in KDD for some reason, yet it's not a hold I'd want to particularly replay, especially since the brilliant TCB version holds still need playing.

At the same time, I've been watching my other half play through the first 5 or 6 levels of it (I insisted she should start with KDD), and yeah. There's too much... *space*. I doubt I'll ever play through from scratch again.

If you're unsure where these options are, PM me.

And also that you posted two messages saying the same thing. It is generally desirable to fix your posts when they have problems in them rather than post a second time with the same information.

I think I kind of agree with you, Syntax. If it's the first hold you play, or you play holds from that version first, it's a spectacular hold. However, if you have played other versions of DROD, it gets tedious. Even so, what threw me off my second play through was the fact that I had it in AE, and therefore I had no backspace. I think that if I decided to import it into TCB, I would play it again.

JTRH, definitely. To me it has the best plot and sense of discovery when you find a new element.

KDD was the first and it introduced all of the elements AND it has the benefit of still being one of the biggest holds around, but the truth is there are so many tedious rooms and the plot is so removed from the game it simply isn't a good hold. By today's standards it's an above average hold with moments of excellence.

I hadda go with KDD. It started me out on DROD, and made me weep with frustration. Began it on webfoot, didn't complete it until architects edition, and left me with the greatest feeling of accomplishment I've had with a video game since the first Zelda.

Also, I haven't played the others... well, I've played some of the TCB demo, and I bought JtRH a few days ago (finally!) and have gotten to level 9 so far. Its been great so far, and well worth my long delayed $20. But until I complete them, we'll have to go with the classics.
