I noticed that Subterra proclaimed WINE compatibility and, having sworn off Windows, decided to try it out. Sure enough, it installed and ran, but at first run I noticed the game put itself into a fullscreen window...after forcefully changing the screen resolution to 800x600. Turning on Hi-Res didn't change the resolution, so it was stuck like that. Furthermore, after testing out a few levels, I decided to exit out of the game and get back to other things...except I couldn't. Upon exit, the entire screen (save a working cursor) went black and no further input was accepted other than the mouse cursor (not even clicks) and the good old forcefully-deny-power mechanism.

Does Subterra really require such low-level graphics access that it has to mess with the screen resolution and do who-knows-what-happened on exit, or is there a way to make it run without such overrides?

Well, no, it doesn't require that.

There used to be a Linux version of it, even. I've been meaning to update that, but at present my Linux distro doesn't understand my graphics card.

Perhaps one of the oldbies still has sublinux.tar.gz around?

WINE is a windows emulator for Linux. As such, it can run windowed...
