Well, yeah. Vista, the new version of Windows, yeah, we know that. Blah, blah, blah. Well, when we got it installed on the computer, I kinda freaked out because:

1) I really liked XP.
2) I had a lot of files saved on XP.

But I didn't find out my true dislike for Vista until I tried it. So yeah, I reinstalled DROD: JtRH, and I want to get back to the old style, Sanctum 2. I installed all the mod files, and then I go to the Configuration file to insert the respective line that allows you to use the mod. Then what happens? It doesn't save. It can't save. Why? Because Windows Vista is too protective and it blocked the change. Yep! Microsoft is getting smart. But this time it went over the line. I can't edit any config files on any of the games I have. I hate Windows Vista. I know some of my options. One, I can downgrade to XP, but my dad ruled out that option. Two, I could try and turn off some of the firewalls, but in fear of viruses, I don't want to. Three, ask here. So what should I do?

Keep posting,

Well, this happened to me. Best thing you can do to fix your problem is:

1. Make the changes.
2. Save it on your desk
3. Move the file in the folder
4. If it asks for an admin password, enter it.

And voila, you should have it as you want.

AFAIK, Vista stores those type of configuration files in a hidden place somewhere in your user account.

The implementation is, IMHO, downright awful.

It's actually pretty elegant, given what they had to work with (applications that are still writing user-preference stuff in the system-wide Program Files directory when they should have been writing it in the user profile directory since, oh, 1995).

Quick workaround for old games in general: Install them to C:\Games or something instead of C:\Program Files. All the virtualisation stuff goes away then.

More specific workaround: Anywhere in Windows Explorer that you have a program which is trying to write into Program Files, there will be a Compatibility Files button in the top bar. Click that and it will take you to the user-specific files which the app is actually being made to work with. You can edit those with no issues.
