(a) I assume you mean the backswipe manuever? [yes, sorry - mrimer]
(b) won't that break like ... every stalwart demo? (not the rooms, the demos where people have conquered the rooms...) [no - mrimer]

I was thinking that myself.

Of course, I'm perfectly happy to break demos if it means a better Stalwart ;)

Now if only they turned their swords appropriately before stepping right in front of a monster...

np: Burnt Friedman - Destination unknown (Con Ritmo)

Kind of odd DROD note:

The student who has made the most progress can effectively do backswipe 50% of the time.

He attacks monsters that come from, say, E and NE. Like Stalwarts.

I suppose the "price" of getting to play the 3.0.0 semi-beta is that I might need to replay a bunch of TCB rooms once the public release is made the monster behavior is frozen. that's fine... but, where was the part where the testers carefully reviewed the half-dozen stalwart rooms to make sure this change doesn't make them either trivial or impossible?

So tell me, how exactly does this change stalwart behaviour?

I mean, where does the monster have to be to have the stalwart backswipe him?
Will this work?

I've already seen it happen in the second configuration; in the first one, the stalwart will turn to smite the roach.

np: Pole - Karussell (3)

I'm confused by what you're trying to say here - are you complaining about the process in which this change was introduced (a potentially valid complaint), or are you saying that there are rooms that actually became trivial or impossible? If so, it would be considerably more helpful if you actually name those rooms.

I think the problem is that since Stalwarts now have a different behavior, any demos with the old behavior will be broken.

No, this isn't true. I've looked at some stalwart demos after this change and they're still valid. I don't think it actually changes that much -- in any event, I'm not sure whether the people complaining are saying they want they stalwarts' newly-added brain cell lobotomized or not.

In the post I'm quoting above, silver expliclty said he doesn't have a problem with demos breaking (and it's not clear how many demos, if any, actually broke - it could be that only very few of them did), and mentions *rooms* becoming trivial or impossible. My question is - have any rooms actually become trivial or impossible?

I read silver's post as pointing out that a change like this has the potential to make Stalwart rooms in TCB impossible, or possibly quite a bit easier (but I'm not seeing "trivial" on any of them). And that it would be a good idea to check those rooms before making this an official TCB patch. As for who's going to do it, I say it's up for grabs-- play through the level and post here about it, and probably get a few shiny rank points. (I would consider doing so, but I'm not on Windows.)

schep is exactly right - I wasn't complaining, and I haven't installed any patches yet, I was just saying that giving stalwarts a change of brain might mess up something. there's only the five stalwart rooms that I recall, but in at least two of them, releasing monsters at certain times and angles was required to move them to the right place -- they might not move to the right place anymore if they stop to backswipe a roach on the way or something.
