Re: Tar Superstar v.2 (+1)
'k, the lack of ability to backtrack on the last level just became a really serious irritation, when I discovered that (a) I actually did need to complete the first room, and (b) it wasn't in fact impossible, as it appeared to be. Except that now I have to go back through the level from the start...
To be a little more thorough: I liked the aesthetic here, but there's a fair amount I didn't like. For instance, a lot of the rooms on the first level hit a particular bête noire of mine: there are a lot of holes in edge walls that don't lead to rooms. That leaves a whole lot of guesswork as to where you can actually exit a room (as well as guesswork as to where to find rooms you're missing), which I find extremely irritating. (The not-really-doors on the east and west sides of TMMG:1N were a particularly egregious example of this.)
The first level had some interesting variations on a theme, none of them singularly hard, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, the second and third levels contained a number of rooms I found rather tedious: Mud 4N2E, for instance, felt like a whole lot of plodding, and Mixed Grill 4N involved schlepping around dealing with mud for ages, followed by replaying 2N.
There's a fair amount of good here, but also room for improvement.
