It'll *have* to be -1729. Since 1729 is such an interesting mathematical number. The chances that either that or the number next to it was chosen without knowledge of that are just too small.

BTW: as far as I understand the rules, you can pick ANY number you want, so 1729 doesn't "have"to be the number.

Yeah, but nobody does that because otherwise it would be a pretty boring game. Nobody so far, at least, and hopefully nobody will.

As for 1729.. its the smallest number which is the sum of two (positive) cubes in two ways. Theres some famous story about a guy named Ramanujan who saw it on a taxicab (famous to mathematicians anyway).
