I have it on good authority (i.e., someone who watches much more TV than I do) that the woman with the cats is Rachel Dratch, so I'll guess that the show is "30 Rock".

Last time it was my go I was in work, so I downloaded a trailer of a DVD I have at home and posted a screenshot of that. If all else fails you could do that. Or find a screenshot on google images.

Nah, I'm not going to mod people down over something like that, but you could go ahead and tell us what problems you're having...

Some general advice:

No matter what the OS, you should be able to take screenshots of just about anything with VideoLAN Client (or VLC in short) by playing it in VLC, then choosing "Video/Snapshot". That'll put a PNG of the currently visible frame into your "My Pictures" folder (well, at least under Windows - dunno where exactly they go in other OSes), which you can then convert to something that's a bit smaller (i.e. JPG) in just about any image editing application...

(Oh yeah, VLC has the added bonus that it doesn't use OS-specific codecs but includes built-in decoders for just about everything in it's executable, which means you don't have to go codec-hunting because a file won't play...)

"Not play" as in "my laptop doesn't even notice it's a DVD" or "not play" as in "the standard player application croaks horribly upon startup"?

The latter could be remedied by VLC - the former, not so much.

If it's not the former, you should at least be able to see a "VIDEO_TS" directory on the disc...

While I might sound like a broken record... broken record... broken record... *click*

Download VLC, install it and use it. VLC does *ALL* it's decoding by itself, which means it needs exactly *ZERO* codecs (and doesn't even try to use them, so it also doesn't have problems with a screwed-up-somehow codec selection), and that includes needing exactly *ZERO* codecs installed for playing DVDs.

Yeah, if you want to play DVDs with Windows Media Player (assuming we're talking about Windows here) you need to buy a commercial codec like the one that comes with PowerDVD or WinDVD, but I guess then you wouldn't use WMP to play DVDs in the first place...

I second Briareos on the versatility of VLC. No more codec issues... Unless of course you want to play the file you've got...

Well, I guess two weeks is long enough. The movie was Spider Baby. It was definitely obscure in its time, but I thought it had enough cult status someone would get it now. It stars Lon Chaney Jr as the caretaker for a family with a genetic disease that makes them mentally regress and become insane, starting from childhood. He also sings the theme song.

Its a very strange movie, but quite good for a for a low-budget horror comedy cult film.

But anyway, sorry, I guess it was more obscure than I thought. I was hoping even if no one knew it, they'd maybe recognize Lon Chaney and get it that way.

Here's an easier movie. Probably too easy in fact, but I want to get this thread moving again:
