That's the real Doki Doki Panic. As you can see, it's almost EXACTLY the same as SMB 2 US. The level structure and even the music was kept down to the very note.
I see little evidence of a 16-bit Doki Doki game on either the SFC or GBA (and since it is made by Nintendo, I won't bother checking other systems).

Not quite. The main level theme had an additional new melody added to its end, extending it to over double the original's length. (Which has made for interesting trivia before when challenging people to guess which game a piece of music is from and having them all guess SMB2 and be wrong.) Also, I guarantee you that lopsidation's game is for the PC. Relatively recent too.

Well, that makes finding it suddenly really really easy. Stargirl.

Me and Snacko were on the right track (and TFMurphy seemed to already know what it was), but we made two incorrect assumptions:

1. We (or at least I) assumed that the file name was a red herring.
2. We assumed that there were not very many DDP clones.

Looking at the video, it really does play remarkably like SMB2/DDP. I wonder how we could both tell that from the picture?


By the way, I do have a game I want to do, but I haven't actually quite played it yet (I am about to), and I still need official confirmation.

Easy, IWBTG. It's the screen before the Clown Car boss, on Medium mode.

I Wanna Be The Guy is one of my favorite games, 3rd only to La-Mulana and DROD. It's fantastically fun, and the graphics and music are just retro enough to love.

(For those who haven't heard of it, IWBTG is a very difficult platformer filled with cameos. The creator's intent was for the game to be so ridiculously unfair and sadistic (yet still possible) that it's funny.

In my opinion, IWBTG wasn't that hard. The frustration level never goes anywhere near the Tar City's, and most of the areas (Like the part right after the tetris room, for example) are downright fun.

The problem is, if nobody gets it right, it'll be a bit difficult to give more clues...

I do have to agree with you after playing IWBTG more. At the time I posted, I still haven't actually beaten the Tetris room or the clown car boss. I was more or less awestruck by a video of the Kirby area (which is really quite easy once you get the hang of it, but looks really evil nonetheless).

Anyways, here's the next screenshot, from a short yet fun concept platformer.

Looks like some computer program emulating the Game of Life. However, unless this is a randomly generated initial state after 0 cycles, or unless you're using some funky ruleset that's able to maintain such large amount of noise in it after several cycles, it's pretty much impossible to have this much disorder in the picture.

So I'd say it's more likely some general Cellular Automata emulator.

Either that or one INSANE maze.

Heh, in our dreams. When I read the post, I thought it said "concept platform" (not platformer).

Yes, I know, this is for games (which a CA emulator arguably is not), but they are fun to mess with, and they seemed to fit most of the clues.

If you play the game, it's very easy to see how it works. Everything is made of static, but each thing animates at a different speed and in a different direction.

Here's a really small example I threw together in Jasc Animation Shop.

That was surprisingly annoying to create.

Lost in the Static is correct! Your turn.

(By the way, the game makes the shapes visible through movement- if you watch closely, some patches of static "move" in different directions, some randomly switch around, and some stay still. Our brains naturally pick up on these patterns and see the different types of static as different shapes, instead of just one big bundle.)
