I seem to remember that this game was advertised as having 300 hours of gameplay. That's hard for me to believe -- how long does a full playthrough take?
Well, it isn't a short game, but not 300, no
I haven't played it in a while, but I would say it takes at least 10, if not 15-20.
The game does have a lot of repetition without a lot of the scenery changes other RPGs have. There is pretty much one overworld palette and one for the dungeons. There are mostly palette swapped monsters padding it out. There is the standard grind to gain XP and gold to buy better equipment. Now, I kinda made the game seem bad, but I really enjoyed it.
I really like how all the different gameplay styles seem to gel as you get into it. The first person exploration followed by the top down action battles. Most games that I played at the time would be either action or turn-based, rarely both. Exploring dungeons required light and made it a harrowing experience, as you are always under the gun of running out of health and mana.
I know the story gets panned often, but I still remember one scene. A king has been replaced with a dragon in disguise. At night, the "
king"
goes out and rampages through the country side eating all the sheep. No one in town has any idea, except for the head adviser. He has the best quote ever: "
The King has been rather...
moody lately."
Ok, maybe it isn't that funny, but my mother still quotes that line to this day
