February 2003 - DROD Haiku Contest.
As a start to the newly created forums, Clayton Weiss announced a contest to see who could create the best Haiku, a form of Japanese poetry that is three lines long and follows a specific syllible pattern (5,7,5) for a chance to win an item from the DROD Store. Entries ranged from insulting a roach's intelligence to a clever puzzle in Haiku form. The winner was eytanz, for his second Haiku, which I'm sure we all can relate to. He ended up taking home a lovely DROD Mug home with him. However, reading this isn't going to give you an idea of the entries, so here they are.
eytanz's Entries
#1: Roaches are stupid
Simple corners will stump them
Except if brains help.
#2: Room nearly complete
But safe in a blocked corner
One tar baby lives.
#3: On level thirteen
The maze may seem unsolvable
But patience triumphs.
ClaytonW's Entries:
#1: His blade, large, mighty
Beethro Budkin, Smitemaster
Squash the tiny roach.
#2: Slice, dice, slash, hack, stab
Corpses sprawled across the tiles
Samurai Beethro?
#3: Father dismissed him
He grew up in a dungeon
'Neather wants revenge!
Agaricus5's Entry:
Face West, Five North-East,
One South, Four West, One North-East
Two East. Die. Which Rooms?
[Editor's note: This is a puzzle in poetry form. Seven rooms in King Dugan's Dungeon can satisfy this poem. For the solutions to this puzzle, be sure to check out this thread, although it's much more fun to try it out yourself first]
Malarame's Entries:
#1: The tar mother blinks
Tar spreads to trap Smitemasters
And babies are born.
#2: Goblin jumps around
Avoiding Beethro's sharp sword
Until trapped on wall.
#3: Roaches surround him
Beethro is trapped, no escape
"Aaaah, aaaah" screams Beethro.
Tscott's Entry:
Trapped in a dark room
in a hack and slash puzzle
world. My brain hurts.
