It sounds like there are several people who don't really appreciate the change where the ESC key no longer exits out of DROD. I think I'm one of them. So let your voice be heard! (It's really easy to put it back the way it was if that's what we decide works better.)

Request:

If ESC does lead out of DROD, could the confirmation prompt be removed? I don't care what ESC does, but it should never be used to confirm anything.

Note that, bugs aside, it is impossible to actually lose data by exiting DROD, since it auto-saves both in the game and the editor - therefore, a confirmation message isn't strictly needed.

I agree with eytanz...I think I said in another post, that changing the language of the exit prompt would remove the confusion of the escape key's purpose.

Game on,

How about if we just use alt-F4 to quickly exit with no prompts? I've seen this convention in other games.

That would be good. I think we can assume that when someone hits Alt+F4, it isn't an accident and they really mean it.

And indeed in most other Windows software. Try it now.

I think ALT-F4 is a good idea, but is this also a convention on non-Windows systems? I guess each port could use the native "abort" sequence instead, though.

Alt-F4 works in almost *ALL* Windows software. It's a Windows shortcut that sends the same message as hitting the X button in the corner of the window. I have never seen a program where Alt-F4 didn't work (unless it was frozen).

I don't see a problem with using Escape to escape out of the app. If it's just the confirmation dialog that's throwing everyone for a loop, then how about just exiting immediately upon pressing Escape from the title screen. No data will be lost, it's quickly reversible, and it's convenient. And, as some have observed, it's a boss key. (There've been boss keys since "Rogue" -- a classic ASCII game which actually brought up a fake DOS prompt w/o leaving the game). Clicking on Quit or the 'X' will still bring up the dialog, in which case the confirmation pop-up is displayed (and it works like it does now). If Alt-F4 is hit, this will save and immediately exit.

I like Esc to exit.

By the way, Alt-F4 is a pretty common instant-exit-key in linux, too.

Uh, Alt-F4 already does exit the app.

Ok, in build 28, hitting Escape from the title screen will exit the app immediately w/o bringing up the confirmation dialog.
