I happened to come across a book of sudoku in a store one night. It is a game where you are shown a 9 by 9 grid and some of the numbers are filled in for you, but you use logic to find out what numbers go into the empty boxes. The rules are, every row, column, and 3 by 3 "box" has to have the numbers 1 through 9 in them. Given this information, you know that if a 6 is already in a certain column, then you don't put a 6 in that column. You could find the game on miniclip.com and on flashplayer.com. There are also books where you write in the solution rather like a crossword puzzle. Sudoku might sound confusing but it is not.

My math teacher actually took my Sudoku book from me because I was doing them in class. Thankfully she gave it back.

Sudoku is very big right now. Its been around for a number of years in Japan and occasional puzzle mags, but has gained enormous popularity after some UK papers started printing daily sudoku puzzles along with the daily crossword.

I have beef with Sudoku. My beef is that of all the puzzles that Nikoli releases, it is in my opinion the least interesting, yet it's the only one that has widespread popularity outside Japan.

That's a pretty cool company website right there. It even teaches you how to do their job.

I quite like the Hitori puzzle, and the Masyu puzzle is one that looks ideal for a side project I'm working on.

Sudoku...

I've done some, but I can't understand this fever around it. It's quite fun, but not THAT fun.

Btw, me and my girlfriend did a Sudoku Solver this summer. When I have some time I'll post it.

That Nikoli website is great. I don't even think that sudoku can be compared to slitherlink or nurikabe. I didn't realize that there were so many other logic puzzles out there. I like slitherlink the best because with each puzzle, you have to think differently in order to solve it. With sudoku I just zone out and do certain steps such as what numbers aren't in this row? Where is it possible for them to fit?

I'm getting increasingly frustrated that I'm not a very good compiler. I wanna know how to compile these puzzles!

Here's a daily Sudoku site. They give you a 3x3 grid within each square to use to keep track of which numbers are still possible for that square. After solving the puzzle every day for about 3 weeks, I kind of felt like I could solve an Sudoku I wanted if I had that grid. Since then, I've never really wanted to solve another Sudoku.
