So - this might be a cunning ploy to keep me playing the game - but my computer gets all moody when I try and quit Subterra. I press Quit, the screen goes blank for a minute, then I get a maximised window that's empty (just white) with SubTerra in the title bar. This doesn't respond to anything and I have to call up task manager to close it, which gives me the "Subterra.exe has had to close - we apologise for any inconvenience - please tell Microsoft about this problem" window. Sometimes Task manager won't respond either and I have to manually restart the machine to do anything.

Any ideas on fixing this one?

I get exactly the same error. (But closing it through task manager has worked every time)

I don't know why I've just ignored it... :unsure

Yes, I know what this is... this usually means that your MIDI sound driver is hanging, for whatever reason. It happens to me a lot, but also with non-Subterra-related games.

I get a crash on exit almost every time. I don't get the white-screen thing though; it doesn't hang, just reports an access violation.

I don't know if it's a MIDI thing or not, but I also can't seem to find any configuration option for SubTerra to configure which sound card to use (my machine has two) and the volume setting doesn't affect the music volume, it just stays at "rather loud". Also hi-res mode will not enable, if I turn it on it's still disabled after I restart.

Hi-res mode is meaningless in SubTerra, it's just part of the Crystalshard engine.

I never figured on people using two sound cards... hm, that may actually be your problem. It just uses basic DirectSound/Music calls.
