Schik built a new download area. "What's wrong with my download area?" cries out Mattcrampy. "I worked really hard on that, dammit!"

Crampy, calm down! Nobody is trying to undermine you! The new download area looks a lot like the old one. The difference is that there is a CaravelNet-only section for things that only people with CaravelNet memberships can download.

I could use some help testing it to make sure it does what it says it should. I'd like CaravelNet people to test that they can get the private download I put up there.

I'd like some non-CaravelNet people to test that they can't get the private download. This sounds kind of mean, like asking a dog to test out the new choke collar you got for him. :) So I'll give you left-out-of-the-fun guys a little reward if you post a quick report of your results with the download area, but I'm not saying what it is yet.

I tried following the link by simply not being logged in, and the "CaravelNet Downloads" section didn't even show up. Logged in back on the forum here, in a different window, then went back and hit refresh, and it suddenly popped up. Great cover.

It seems that when I click on the picture link, I get two mails with a link. Is that intentional?

I see four download requests from your account - two sets of two that are a second apart from each other. Are you double clicking on the link or something?

I opened it in a new tab? Oh, and I use an old version of Mozilla. And I only clicked it once. (I clicked two times, each click got me two e-mails, a few seconds after each other.)

Let's say it a bit more clear: I clicked, in Mozilla, on the scroll wheel, and it opened the link in a new tab. I get one confirmation page, but got two e-mails.

Does this sound better?

I did the exact same thing in Firefox (Linux, 1.0.3), but only got the one e-mail. Did it again just now to be sure. Maybe it's a bug in your version of Mozilla ?

I was also unable to recreate it in Mozilla.

But.... I just made a change that *may* help. Previously, if you reloaded the page that told you a link was sent to you, it would re-request the file. Now it will not. Tim, please try it again and see if you get two still.

That's probably it. I've tried it now with Firefox 1.0, and I get only one e-mail as well.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Although I'm not planning to upgrade my Mozilla (Windows version) though.

Yeah, we've got download limits built in to this new system. I removed your unused download requests, so you're below your limit again. Please try it now with the old perhaps buggy Firefox and let's see what happens!

By the way, I am using an old version Mozilla, as well as a new version of Firefox. It's the Mozilla - the one I mainly use - that goes wrong.

I requested a download link and then went over to the cafeteria to get something to eat. (I don't like staring at my email client waiting for a new message I'm expecting.) After I got back, I tried the download link in my mail and the link said it had expired. I think perhaps an hour or two isn't the best time limit for a download link sent through email. (Occasionally emails won't get to me for a few hours, anyway.) But that's just my opinion.

I requested the caravelnet-only download link and got the message in a few seconds into my e-mail inbox. The download went fine and there were absolutely no problems.

You could request another link. The expiration is one of the ways we protect ourselves from public link-posting. (Don't want to go into all of the ways here.)

Yeah, we should probably set some conventions there, you are right.

The demo filenames will probably always be versionless because they are externally linked to from many other sites and we can't change their links each time we have a new version. On the other hand...

Replacing the 'static' url with a "302 temporarily moved" pointing to the version-named errr version should work - it would also mean those coming via an external link should also have the version number in their downloaded filename, which may make things easier...

Anyway, just a thought!

Yeah, I was actually thinking of using Apache's URL rewriting feature to translate a versionless URL to a versionful URL, but same kind of idea.
