OK. After my 1 year free subscription is up, how much will
an additional year cost? (I assume it would be considerably less than another copy of JtRH)

...And if it's more than that, you can always buy another copy of JtRH instead :P

I don't know at this point. Different things could happen:

* We release another game in less than a year and include a CaravelNet renewal with purchase. In that case, you would be encouraged to simply purchase the new game.

* New CaravelNet features and exlusive content make it worth offering as a standalone product. In this case, we would probably offer a renewal significantly less than the cost of JtRH, like maybe $10/year.

* If we get too busy with other things and can't beef up CaravelNet the way we want, then we might give out a free extension to subscriptions.

* We could offer different levels of memberships, i.e. free lifetime membership with limited features if you purchase any one product, and "premium" membership gives you additional features.

So it really depends on what happens this year. We're not going to gouge anybody. It's really unlikely than an annual renewal would be more than $20. Also, if CaravelNet were only going to have the features that it currently does a year from now or the new features we have planned just aren't popular, we'd probably just automatically extend everyone's membership until there is a new product or better features on CaravelNet.

For anybody that read this in e-mail and was outraged:

"It's really unlikely than an annual renewal would be less than $20"

...I intended to say.

I just got my JtRH-CD recently, and I haven't had much time to play around with CaravelNet, so a quick question:

Is there (or are there plans for) something like a "holds manager", which would allow you to check the contents of a "hold" directory against the available user holds for new holds or modified versions of holds you already have? It's really hard to keep up with all the user holds, especially when some are modified after being uploaded to the holds section. That is something I would really like to see and which would save a lot of online-time which would otherwise be spent perusing the lists. If there already is something like this, forgive my ignorance.

Well, the Hold Select screen does something like this. Holds that you have imported locally are shown in black. Holds on CaravelNet that you haven't imported are shown in grey. And when you've got a CaravelNet hold, but it's been updated on the server, it will show "(Updated!)" next to it's name.

Okay, thanks for the tip Schik. The way it is is well-designed and completely sufficient. I probably would have noticed it on my own, but somehow my CaravelNet key got erased without my noticing it. I have a suspicion it was caused by my importing a player file after having entered the key (or maybe it was due to patching to 2.0.6, sorry I can't be more accurate.)

After importing the player file from a second computer with DROD:AE, I can confirm that this invalidated my key. With the new key, I tried to upload my scores, but since it was taking so long, I killed DROD 2.0 with the task manager, which caused my new key to be invalidated. (Reentering the key after restarting DROD did not work.) If this is intended/unfixable, etc. just say so and I will stop posting useless information.

I don't think this should happen, but I'm not sure.

If you exit DROD brutally, then your key will be invalidated. Also, uploading your scores takes a long time, especially if you're using a modem and have lots of demos to be uploaded (because DROD plays through all demos before attempting to upload them). I have a broadband connection and it takes about 3-4 hours to upload my scores (but then again, I have a lot of demos to upload). If you're using 2.0.6, you won't have to test/upload the same demos twice, though, so the second time you press the button the process should take a lot less time.

Edit: Oh, and I believe you have an unlimited amount of keys, so you shouldn't be afraid to request a new one (although it can get annoying sometimes if you have to do it often).

That's right - the 'key' is a session ID, and when DROD exits it automatically requests a new one for next time. If DROD doesn't exit cleanly, you have to do it manually. Requesting a new key constantly doesn't cast suspicion onto you, as it usually happens behind the scenes every time you play.
