I am looking for a game I played in the early 2000s that is very similar to DROD. It's also turn-based - enemies can only move if we do so. Some differences from DROD game:
- it was less detailed and colorful, game aesthetic was similar to minesweeper (grey + black + red)
- UI was simpler, I don't think it had minimap or Beethro in the top-left corner
- there was a level with card objects (not collectible, it was some kind of structure), I don't know what exactly they were for, maybe some kind of environmental puzzle
- there were also square structures that spawn enemies
- IIRC the enemies looked different, more like aliens from space invaders (but maybe my memory is deceiving me)

I suspect it may have been some kind of DROD clone because overall this game was really similar. Maybe something comes to your mind?

It was turn based, there were pyramid-square-shaped enemy spawners, there was a casino with cards, enemies look a bit like space invader aliens.

You'll probably need to run a Win98 virtual machine to play it - that's what I did last year.

Drain Storm was a fun game. I think it was all procedurally generated without any actual puzzles. It's like playing a ton of horde management levels.

The Golems in DROD work similarly to one of the enemies in Drain Storm that leave an obstacle where you kill them. I'm not sure if we were directly inspired or not. But I like that mechanic because it forces variety in tactics. You can't keep killing monsters at the same square.

Wow, that's right. The game I was looking for was Drain Storm. Thanks a lot, I was looking for it on the internet but couldn't find it anywhere.
