There are ways to avoid freezing.
One is to have protection from the cold that gives you more time outside until you freeze.

×Mystical Mages may have mysterious magical items that prolong the time until you freeze when outside. A sorceress has a simple spell that if learned will warm her, wily Warriors will have wild vargs providing fur to warm them, stolen boots for the thief
Second is to find out how to enter cities when the gates are closed. The how depends on the class you are playing

Third is finding a warm spot in the wilderness (as far as I remember there are 3)
