this will probably start a real barrage of insults at me but...I for one wish there were cheats available for caravel. The game is too hard for my feeble brain and I get discouraged. I could never have got through unreal or quake without cheats but enjoyed just playing without the angst of dieing(sp?)
every two seconds. For the purists there is always the option of playing without help. My favorite all time game, Thief, had no cheats but purists played invisible mode, not alerting any guards or being seen. I was happy to play on intermediate level. I haven't even been able to get out of level three in drod even with the forum so am frustrated with the game. I am not stupid but these puzzles stump me

Cheats? How dare you! You may never post here again!

Only joking. :D I know how you feel. There are some "cheats":

Other than that you can wait for the next release and then you can import and export demos. That way complete solutions can be given for any room.

Until then, just relax in the knowledge that this is a very difficult game, and that there is NO SHAME in being stuck so early. It took me ages to get started with as well.

Keep in mind I'm not holding anything against you here, but...

I don't ever plan to put cheats into the Caravel Distribution. Its philosophy is: there is a best way to play the game, and it may not be the easiest, but we'd like you to do it that way. For this reason, you can't save and restore from any point in the game. And decisions have been made to limit the number of player settings, because despite individual preferences, I like to nudge people onto the High Road.

But that's just for the Caravel Distribution, which is probably too damned self-righteous. Grab the code and make your own version of DROD with cheat codes and stuff. Or if you lack the skills, convince somebody that has them. It would be a very easy thing to distribute a cheat-friendly version of DROD.

I must say, having access to the development version which has a few cheats enabled for testing's sake - you don't want cheats. Even something simple like movement undo takes so much away from the game. Makes it wayyyy too easy - you don't have to think as much. I'm *very* glad that I finished DROD before grabbing the development version - I doubt I would have been patient enough to NOT use cheats. It was a lot tougher without them, but that means it was a lot more rewarding when I did finish.

Funny, I normally only see "To cheat or not to cheat?" topics on games that also have a multiplayer component. Then the consensus usually is "do whatever you want in single player but don't you dare touch multiplayer." I agree with this sentiment, and if cheats are enabled in a game I don't care if you use them for your own benefit.

However, in a game like DROD, which is not a commercial product anymore, and which is really a labor of love, I would not expect any of the developers (especially Erik) to include any cheats in a final release. There is just too much of a sense of accomplishment for beating a tough game like this with just the hints around here for help.

To be perfectly honest, if you can't beat a puzzle game without cheating, don't bother playing. Puzzle games are all about patting yourself on the back for figuring it out, not about twitch reflexes or an engaging storyline. For almost any other type of game I would be more sympathetic. Not for this kind.

I admit, after beating Doom it was lots of fun to go around invincible and kill things only with the chainsaw or the rocket launcher, or to use the walk through walls cheat and only play using the (cheated) map screen. But again, it's like comparing apples and oranges. Cheats make a kind of sense in that type of game. Not in DROD.

So, good luck, maybe DROD will finally "click" for you...if you really really want to see what's around the corner, just try harder. Look in the challenges forum for rooms you've already beaten, and see if you can solve those challenges. Maybe that will sharpen your skills enough to try some of the later levels. I am sure you have already been asking for help, so trust me, many of us enjoy taking a break from work to give some hints on a room. Personally, however, when I am not enjoying a game, I don't play it. Yes, some of DROD's rooms are frustrating. But the feeling you get when you finally figure a room out is great, and having that ruined just isn't fun.

Game on,

Still, it would be fun to have an "invincible mode" in drod, but only activable once you've beaten the game, or only in rooms already completed.

That would take away the entire game. It may be interesting for 2 minutes.

There is something like that in the next release. If you beat a hold authored by someone else, i.e. Dugan's Dungeon, you are allowed to edit the hold. So you can edit the rooms and put tons of mimic and invisibility potions in them, add and remove walls, etc.

I dunno. Just not feeling motivated to put cheats into the game.

Whoa...That's really cool. There would be a whole new way of doing challenges; making the rooms so the challenge must be done.

You also didn't read the time & date of the last post.

Did you accidentally sort the forum backwards?
