This is something I've always been curious about, back to the original QfG games. How exactly do skill checks and skill growth actually work? I've never managed to find the algorithms behind them. Now that I'm working on my own QfG-style game (still in the very early stages, though), I've thought about it even more than usual. I've got a few algorithms worked out, but, if you don't mind my asking, I'd love to know how other people handled this.

Skill checks, as far as I can tell, are really just adding the relevant skill and stat, although like in the original games, there appears to be a fudge factor involved, since there's a point where performing a test is increasingly likely to work, but not guaranteed.

For the growth, I'm assuming there's some kind of hidden experience for each stat that increases with every swing of the sword, attempt to climb a tree, etc. My co-conspirator and I have discussed various ways of weighting these, how to handle more passive actions like walking and sneaking, etc. Again, I'm curious how you guys tackled this.
