I can't figure out how to pay the toll for Liff to cross so he can go to the garden area and advance the sidequest.

I've got the amethyst which I apparently can't use for anything else (I'm a Warrior) and that's fine for my crossing, but how do I get the troll to recognize I want to pay for Liff's crossing instead?

What am I missing here?

He's a greedy one, he expects you to pay for yourself...and then Liff. So hand over the goods to cover your own crossing then give him a 2nd payment - silver, the cursed ring if you have it (you can go pick it up again if you already gave it away; just save and load for it to reappear in your inventory), or anything else shiny you find.

Oh... I attacked the Troll, I gave him payment, then walked into the middle of him - he says he wonders where you've gone, then I attacked him

That sounds like a little glitch to me. It is related to getting rid of Fremont though

I haven't considered trying to attack him. Maybe I'll go to a previous save and give that a go.

Now to figure out that dang-blasted Runic Staff puzzle...

There is an alternative, just in case that's dishonorable (I don't know either):

I can't see anything dishonorable in doing that, should be safe.

I can't even seem to get the guy to go to the bridge. I tell him that the girl wants to meet him, but he just says that he can't go because of the troll. How do I make him grow a spine?

You don't. You need to get rid of the troll (or pay the toll for Liff - you need to pay yours first, THEN another one for Liff), and then Liff will agree to go to the holt. He won't budge from the village until you've sorted out the troll problem, one way or the other.

I have the same problem, but when I go to the bridge, there isn't any troll, and I can't make him come out. (I already beat the troll attack and saw him there, but I have never seen him in person no matter how many times I cross the bridge.)

Liff keeps saying he's afraid of the troll, but the troll doesn't appear to be there...?

Yeah, right after posting it I realized that of course the troll can only come out at night or he turns to stone...

But then why on earth is Liff so afraid of him? Liff can't easily cross the bridge at night anyway because the town gate is closed (I had to go annoyingly far out of my way just to reach the troll because of that), so there's no actual way for Liff to ever encounter him unless he goes out of his way in the same fashion.

I suppose it's because he needs to keep his shop open during the day, so he only has night time to go out and romance Lithrasir

I have the issue that after telling Liff and Lithrasir that each wants to meet the other and after paying the troll, I can't speak to either of them to meet at the Holt :-( Am I missing something?

I am actually not sure... It was some time (real-life time :-))inbetween me giving her the flowers and talking to Liff about it. Whenever I try to talk to her she doesn't reply and at night she is in the tavern...
