I can confirm that I have been unable to get Drod RPG to run under Windows 98 on my old Dell computer.

Why does the DataPath.txt have a space between EVERY letter? Surely it should be C:\Program Files\DROD RPG - Tendry's Tale\Data instead of C : \ P R O G R A M F I L E S \ D R O D R P G - T E N D R Y ' S T A L E \ D a t a ; C : \ P R O G R A M F I L E S \ D R O D R P G - T E N D R Y ' S T A L E \ D a t a ;
shouldn't it?

Disclaimer: I only have the demo version. My old computer couldn't display the game properly anyway. There really should be a third item here but I can't think of one.

Edit: I found my backups from when I transfered to this computer. On that DataPath.txt is as follows: C:\Program Files\DROD RPG - Tendry's Tale Demo\Data;C:\Program Files\DROD RPG - Tendry's Tale Demo\Data;

That's no spaces, that's null bytes - DataPath.txt contains Unicode instead of ASCII where every character is actually 2 bytes long.

It's just that the first 128 Unicode characters conveniently correspond 1:1 to the first 128 ASCII characters, so ASCII text stored as Unicode will look like ASCII text with null bytes between the characters when opened in an application that doesn't know about Unicode, like Windows 98's notepad.exe and actually most parts of Windows 98.

Come to think of it, perhaps DROD.exe was compiled without the Windows 98 Unicode layer? At least it's not included in a freshly created VC 2008 project...

Why doesn't the compatibility mode work?

Because Windows 2000+ has a Windows 95/98 compatibility mode for old software, but Windows 95/98 obviously has no Windows 2000/XP/Vista compatibility mode for new software?

np: T.Raumschmiere - Brenner (ft. Deichkind & The Crack Whore Society) (I Tank U)
