I always feel weird being the first person to post...

Anyway, I'm stumped. The first 3 guards pose no challenge. Likewise the second 3. Nor either snake. But the swarms at the bottom... yikes!

I've tried using the snakes to block the guards so I can retreat to the bridge and lure them to a plummeting death, but can't make that work at all. So far, I'm unable to come up with any scenario that even allows me to escape the lower room once I release the guards.

What you're describing is what the top-scoring demos for this room do: retreat between the two snakes to the bridge.

I did something different. I used the rattlesnake to completely block off one side of the passage between the serpent's yellow door and the wall. Then I killed the guards as they came to me in that hiding hole. I'm not sure my way is any easier than the dash to the bridge. They both seem to require a lot of trial and error.

Just laugh at me because I know this room is very easy.
However, please give me some more hints.

Pretty much any way you attempt to do this room will involve trial and error, but I removed most of the trapdoors on one bridge, then had the serpent act as a wall on the same side of said bridge, giving me enough time to retreat back after hitting the orb. If you can manage that, the guards should become more manageable.
