I just figured out something... The rock giant splitting must be how golems reproduce. They grow until they take up 4 tiles, then they get hit by something to split them into 4 golems, one of which is dead.

Obviously they use hot plates instead.

No need to have anyone else around, and it's possible to get all 4 golems out alive

Adder's can't eat ANY large monster, as far as I know. Except tarstuff, but that's on the object layer, so it doesn't count. And tarstuff mothers aren't large monsters, they're two monsters. So there. But yeah, quite an interesting method of breeding, eh?
