just a couple things

always count the moves so you can make sure you are in a safe spot when the mothers spawn

always make sure if there is no safe way in/out of an area that you clear all the tar in that area

if you do these 2 things tar becomes fairly easy

Take it serious. Especially the last tip is essential for survival. And don't get mad. It is a hard level, in my opinion.

What makes it so hard is that if you hit the tar at the wrong angle it " rounds out" so that you can't do anything except restart.

If you stab the tab incorrectly, usually you can wait for it to grow and try again.

3S2E was the hardest room in my early DROD career. I was about to give up, then I found the included demo :P

In level 8, there are normally a couple of ways to get around the tar, so the rounding out is not the end. Look at all options before hitting restart. And, if worst comes to worst, step on a checkpoint before digging in too deeply.

I always feel like a sissy when I step on a checkpoint, but I'm really really thankful for them. The room with the three tar mothers on Level 8 would probably have been impossible without it.

It's the nerves...:buh

Yeah, I stopped playing on Webfoot at that three tar mother room...I can't imagine getting through the rest of the game without checkpoints, it requires a lot of dedication and steady fingers.

Game on,

And the fact you need to remember to save... checkpoints any day of the week!

Game on,

Indeed. I made it through the three tar mother room in Webfoot, but it was probably the room I spent the most time on during all the time I played Webfoot. I think I made it to somewhere around level 16 back in Webfoot, where I eventually gave up. Later, before checkpoints were added, I actually completed the game (I can't remember whether this was in Caravel or Webfoot). Let's just say that I wouldn't want to do it again.

Well, there are other options. You can use a tool like RemoteKeys ( http://www.freewarehits.de/RemoteKeys.htm) to record your keystrokes and play them back later on.

I guess it's some sort of cheating, since you will really start to think less while playing. But its saves a LOT of frustration when playing complicated levels with few or none checkpoints.

I've got a similiar tool that I use for work purposes... my feelings on using it with drod are sort of wishy washy.

I completed the game without using any macro recorder, but I admit that now I do have shortcuts for "qw" and "wq"... to prevent accidently hitting "qww" halfway through killing off a swarm (I tend to do that).

But recording longer sequences, like how to navigate a whole section of tar, seems to undermine some of the gameplay. Still I know exactly how frustrating it is if you repeatedly die at the same place far into a tar maze.

My take on it is, do what makes playing the game fun for you :)

Well, for me, I stop looking at the screen. You can get into a fine rhythm just by concentrating on hitting each key one after the other.

But why? Seeing the hordes of roaches slowly disappear beneath your sword is quite satisfying... especially if you've died a few hundred times trying to get into that position where you can kill them all without any problem.

:D
