Who said it would be easier?

If you have any problems with any room/hold you can go to the H&S Board. CaravelNet is just some cool invention to download holds ingame and recieve the Smitemaster Selections (and other things).

I think that whoooosh was the sound of his joke going over your head. :P

I don't mean to be harsh, but no, that is the sound of the
intended humour going over your head. I find it astounding
that you somehow managed to interpret my post as anything
but a joke.

I'm sorry, I'm not English/American and I have difficulties with some of these expressions.

I found it strange for a 27-28 years old guy to do that kind of rant. So... sorry.

That should have been a clue. ;)

Aww, c'mon, no need to be sorry. I should probably use smileys
more (although I hate them). :)

For any non-English-fluent readers, what he really meant was: "Yes, this is the internet, (British) English may or may not be someone's first language."

What really frustrates me is that a saying like "it's not too bad" could mean "it's not terribly bad" or "it's really cool" depending on the person. Personally, I found Banjooie's sarcasm not too bad...

Well, then, Tim, at some point you need to go 'Hey, in English, people often say something and mean the exact opposite', and think before you post.

TScott, that's awesome.

Is sarcasm really a phenomenon limited to English?

(I just realized that if the answer is 'yes', then I'll never know it because I won't be able to tell a sarcastic 'yes' (meaning 'no') from a real 'yes').

That reminds me of the actualy debated historic queistion if humor was an invention by modern man (the belif was that people didn't have any humor in e.g. the 14th century...)

To fair, when I asked, I assumed the correct answer would be: "no, of course not."

But I wanted to ask before asserting that "English isn't my first language" is no excuse for not understanding sarcasm. Just in case, by some strange chance, it IS.

I would imagine that it's posible to be familiar with sarcasm in your native language and to still miss it in other languages with which you are less familiar.

For example, I would probably fail to notice any sarcasm in French. Hmmm...that may be a poor example.

Well, seeing as the ancient Greek playwrights wrote comedies...

Oh, comedies.

Take The Merchant of Venice, a play that’s usually classified as a comedy. Very funny stuff there!

I actually find The Merchant of Venice very funny. A lot of Shakespeare comedies I find funny. My personaly favorite is Twelfth Night. Shakespeare is full of humor if you know where to look.

My drama teacher in school was annoyed with the stuffy way we did Shakespeare in English Literature classes, and made sure to explain to us where the dirty jokes were, and what they meant in the context of the day...

That was cool..

I still dropped both English Lit, AND drama when I could, though :)

Its all context though isn't it. A 14th century joke would be rubbish now but hillarious back then. Shakespeare's wit isn't appreciated today as its hard to contextualise it...

Well, yeah, but his point was, that whilst English Literature teachers try to make out that it's all a great posh literary art, our drama teacher actually pointed out, that there was actually quite a lot of base humour - and also pointed out that his main audience were NOT posh people...

I think Shakespeare was late 16th Century. And yeah I agree that a lot of his humour was base and aimed at ordinary folk. But in its contemporary context it takes on a whole different meaning, a refined 'posh' quality, as that type of humour is now expressed differently.

Its just a minor point about why these days when someone says Shakespeare, we dont normally say 'now there's a funny guy'. Even though he is.

He's my favourite stand-up comic anyway, did you see him on Letterman? :D

What about cave drawings?
They're blatantly an attempt at caricature.
I mean, it hardly looks anything like an antelope, so it's gotta be intentional ;)

??? Have people misinterpretated me bigtime, or are you just sarcastic? My point was that it is ridiculous to belive that sarcasm is something restricted to the english language. Just as I find it rediculous to claim that humor was an invention by modern man. -_-
