I was wondering, on level 3, What is the most efficient way to open \"The Eight Gates of Bill?\" I always did it by striking all the orbs in order from bottom to top, then hitting the top again, then hitting the third from the bottom. In numbers:

9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1, 7

And that first hit actually isn\'t needed, so you could start from the second from the bottom, hit them all the way up, then the top, then third from the bottom:

8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1, 7

That\'s 10 strikes. Is there a faster way?

Yes, there is definitely a faster way. I can do it in 5, and have no spawned roaches formed yet. Can anyone beat that?

That\'s the way I always beat that room. Of course, I didn\'t find that particular solution until I\'d already beaten the room by hitting orbs for about 10 minutes

I can do it in 5 as well. I believe that is the fastest way.

Hello again!

I'm doing some DROD research (that is, how long can one play DROD without any sleep or food/drink (just joking, I'm not that cruel , finished most of the first and second level challenges already and also the room with the scroll (saying that you could reach the scroll without re-entering the room; done it without it).

But to the point...

After some time (about 1 hour) I've finally managed to do The Eight Gates Of Bill (eh Windows And Gates Of Hell in five hits/moves/strokes. Hovewer, I'm not happy. :~) Zex wrote he could do it BEFORE any roaches appear (he meant ANY roach forms, including eggs, if I got him right) and in my case... well the first stage (the smallest eggs) appear. I've even drawn a chart with all switches and their affections on doors, and came to two different solutions of five strikes but none give me the pleasure of NOT seeing the eggs.
Below some spoilers, beware, these are not in an obvious form, although hidden (This was to be a challenge, eh?)



Note the third and fourth word could be as well switched If you don't know what I'm talking about , just post and I'll answer. However I think it'll be no problem to you folks

BTW Zex PLEASE send me an e-mail or smth (post maybe) with your solution... that is, five strokes all right but without any eggs at the end (err... no assocations, please )

Ok I just had a look at it. 5 hits can be done a few ways.

1st try was appalling had roaches half way across the room.

2nd try was better but had eggs.

3rd time was the charm opened them all before any eggs appeared. Made 2 more moves before they appear.

I found a new way, cuz I had forgotten my old one. And I just found another! It is possible for it to be done in 5 orbs, one move before spawning, and five orbs, one move before the eggs become roaches. I don't know my original way though...and I think the challenge has been lost. Whatever! I still can't do it with two to spare though...

Hmm...rechecking my previous solution that I thought I shared with Scott, I found that the roaches appeared on the first move after I hit the final orb. Perhaps the solution with two moves is not possible, but I assure you that the one with one is.

As a trivial side challenge, what is the fewest number of strikes needed to reclose all of the doors from an open position?

As for levelthirteen... well I must say that you're missing one thing.. Look at the orb 'manuals' and examine what they CLOSE... I think you should get it fast that orb #6 is not the ideal way to finish the sequance.. keep trying! GL

As for the solution of mine... three moves after it, the roaches are ready to kill... (that is fully formed) Can anyone beat that (I'm sure you can )

Not that long after you posted, a new board called "Architecture" was added to the forum while I was on vacation. It is for posting level sets (also called holds) as works in progress.

Try playing Deep hold Level Four Once North - The Ten Gates of Tom. It is one of my favourite rooms, and, in my opinion, one of the hardest in the hold, because you...well, I guess anyone who plays it will see.....
