I haven't really played too many arcade games since the "
Street Fighter 2 Revolution"
. Before that, though, a few of the games that I really loved:
In the fantasy action category, Black Tiger, Rastan, and this one pseudo-RPG that began with a C I think...can't really remember.
Smash TV and Total Carnage were always horribly fun quarter-suckers.
In terms of really old sci-fi games, there were two. One of them had the main character, which looked kind of like Samus Aran from Metroid, in a side-scrolling platformer where you just shot and killed lots of creatures. You went to each planet in the solar system (not in order)...I think you started on Saturn or Neptune. It was hard, but fun. I have no idea what the name is...I have asked on MAME forums and the like and always get pointed to a different game. I think I did find it once but couldn't get the emulator to work.
The second game is very old, and in fact I only played it in summer camp when I was 6 or 7 (early 80's), but I loved it so much I still remember it (just not the name). You piloted this spaceship through these huge asteroids. They filled up the screen, and inside was maze-like, and you had to avoid the turrets and their bullets and the walls of the asteroid. I think you had to destroy something in the middle and then get out again. The first stage had 5 asteroids, and then you went on to the second stage which had 5 more and were much much harder. Again, no one else has ever heard of this game, which is a pity.
I am sure I could rack my brain and come up with dozens more (Marble Madness, Willow, etc.), but I think that's enough for now.
Game on,
