Moves like a roach but when there is an uninterrupted orthagonal or diagonal line between it and Beethro, it'll dash all the way over onto you in one move and kill you instantly.

(By uninterrupted line, I mean one consisting of tiles that it could move onto. So, putting your sword between you and the shadow creature will stop it from pouncing apon you.)

What kinds of puzzles are you envisioning using this element in?

Haven't thought about it much yet but I'm sure someone could think of a puzzle involving these, considering that you'd have to keep something between Beethro and the 'creature most of the time.

I feel that this monster would be far too difficult. Imagine a room with just two of them. Then try splitting them so they're on opposite sides of the room.

It's similar to some ideas proposed before DROD: AE, like lazy eyes (laser eyes).

I would not enjoy gameplay with this monster.

How about, if there's an uninterrupted line between it any you, it races twoards you very quickly (Five squares a turn say) and/or you can block it with your sword, so you have an opportunity to kill it.

I still think the monster is too powerful. Think again of just 2 of them, and what horrible things you could do with them.

Right now, it has no disadvantage. Every other monster has one. Well, except the Slayer, but he's not really a monster.

Roaches, Roach Queens, spiders, babies, evil eyes-walls stop them, and they won't go around them (stupidity)
Wraithwings-cowards when alone.
Seeps-floors stop them.
Serpents/rattlesnakes-can't move diagonally.
Rock Golems/Wubbas-can't cut corners.
Goblins-minor disadvantage, but can be led to death.
Tar/mud-can't kill Beethro.
Brains/mothers-Stationary
Guards-the wait key (along with some other tactics.)

As this monster has no disadvantage, it is far too powerful.

I would suggest that the monster MUST move X spaces per turn, roachstyle, but that if it lands on something that is not either a floor square (styles of floor okay), open door, or trapdoor, that it dies. Other monsters, orbs, walls, pits, etc.

I'd also say that going through a space containing a weapon would kill it, but can go through non-pointy things. I'd also say that it has to land directly on Beethro to kill him.

I'm still not sure if I'd be for the monster with these ideas, mainly due to implementation reasons, along with "where'll they move?", but I'd be more in favor when it has a disadvantage of some sort.

I guess it's very good that the Slayer has these disadvantages...else Beethro would die a lot more, and not get past level 3 :)

Very true. Against the more senior Slayers, Beethro wouldn't stand much of a chance in one-on-one combat.

Is this a clue about TCB? :)

Looks like the cat's out of the bag on this one, Mike.

I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a cat or a bag in any future DROD game.

Ooh! A cat monster! It walks to the nearest ray of sunlight and sits there licking itself. Or, when you open a door, it goes through it, then sits down there, and when you close the door it starts making annoying sound effects.

A bag... hm. Okay, there's a large bag lying on the ground that serves as an obstacle. If you slice it open with your sword, something unknown comes out. Nah, too lame. A queen could come out, because pretty much anything else would be immediately sliceable upon emerging, and a big serpent in a small box is pretty strange. A wubba would work, though.

Hurrah! I didn't make the first spoiler! For once.

Let me continue to not make spoilers about TCB:

Hmm....

Maybe "Cat" is a metaphor for the Slayer (and his devilish tactics) and "Bag" is a metaphor for the next game. If so, it could mean that the Slayer story line is now being removed from the next game.

Oh, dear. I wrote it and I don't even know what it means. I think the tactical misdirection is getting a bit too deep.

Hmmm! You mean there will be a Mike in TCB?
(Anyone found Mike in JtRH? It's in there somewhere, but only in some versions ;))

Yeah, you need to put the roach into the daycare centre until it reaches level 50, then take it out and on its first fight it turns into an Underwater Portable Orb, which you can use to revive the Neather on level 13. If you catch him, he'll sell you the key for 999 greckles, which you can use to get to Mike.

True!

How else would the students become Slayers then, without training?
