What's wrong with having the domain as .net, if'n you don't mind me asking?
Well, there are a few reasons. The big one is that a lot of people still think of "
.com"
as a "
regular"
or "
normal"
domain name, and the other extensions seem weird and unintuitive to them. So somebody will have a harder time remembering to go to "
caravelgames.net"
than they will "
caravelgames.com"
. And some people will undoubtedly associate a "
.net"
domain name with being less legitimate or respectable. It doesn't matter if these are fair appraisals--it's just how people's brains work right now. And I know that most of the people on the forum here are cool with "
.net"
, but you are a self-selected bunch and have a higher than average familiarity with the internet. Some people still think the internet was created by AOL and Al Gore, and that you can make money by forwarding e-mails to 10 friends.
The second, lesser reason is that I think a "
.com"
extension more clearly expresses what the site is about than "
.net"
. Caravel is a company that is trying to sell products and make money.
If it were easy, I'd probably also change "
drod.net"
to "
drod.org"
. The site is meant to stay independent from selling and marketing, and it doesn't have anything to do with networking. So "
.org"
would make more sense. But everybody's used to it, and "
drod.org"
is already taken by some pornmonger. I began with "
drod.net"
because Jean-Michel Martin of TLK registered it for me and gave me free webhosting in exchange for a little help with DROD3D.
I have also waited for over a decade for this silly guy to let his "
caravel.com"
domain lapse. At one point he had some poetry up there. But he took that down. And now, for years, there has been nothing there but a message saying:
But please, no offers to buy the domain. IT IS NOT FOR SALE. You'll just waste my time and yours. I really can't stress this enough. Thank you.
If someone is that determined to hold onto a domain name, well, I have a little respect for him, but holy jeebus, he's done just about nothing with his precious domain since I arrived in Seattle in '92.
On my quest for the best possible domain name, I also talked to the owner of "
caravel.net"
. It's a network consulting company. I told them I was willing to buy the domain, but they didn't even want to negotiate for that. And that's another wasted domain name that doesn't get used for anything.
And there is a very long and involved story about how I lost caravelgames.com, had to buy it back from jawas, who never bothered to give me contact info--just took my money. Then the domain name got put into a big ICANN limbo for two months. Now finally, fingers crossed, no-jinxs-please... I'm probably going to have the domain in a few days.
Domain names are a fracking pain.
