Since no-one else's posted something about it, I thought I'd better do so before the day ends (it will in about 10 minutes for me
).
Today (9th February) is the first day of the year of the Rooster, year 2005 in the Gregorian Calendar, although according to the Chinese Calendar, which is based on lunar cycles and observations of the Sun's position, it is the year 4703.
Although we do recognise it as a festival, we personally don't celebrate it much, since we're quite far from the rest of our relatives (who live in Malaysia), and aren't part of an Oriental community, so I can't really say that I know much about the traditions and cultures behind it. However, I did find this
Wikipedia article on it, which is quite informative, and maybe someone who knows about it a bit better than I do can also step in to mention something too.
Anyway, to the DROD.net Forum, "
kung hei fat choi"
(this is the Cantonese version of the standard greeting, which we use, although my parents mainly speak Hokkien, which is a little odd. It roughly translates as "
congratulations and be prosperous"
), and if you do celebrate it (or even if not), have a great Chinese New Year!
