By both process of elimination and also based on the Citizen hint, I need to be a Gel Baby to pass through both the oremites and the shallows.
(In fact, out of the eight roles we took on so far - Beethro, Water Skipper, Construct, Gel Baby, Wubba, Seep, Tar Baby, Goblin - only Beethro and Gel Baby have the ability to cross both.)
However, how do I smuggle the Gel into here??
I have to go through 3S, so I'm entering that either from East or West.
If I come from East, I can only be a Goblin or Beethro, because of the broken walls in 3S2E, so that's no use.
But if I am coming from the West exit, then the spikes in 3S2W only allow a Wubba to pass, therefore I can only use the roles offered in 3S1W and 3S, none of which is a Gel Baby.
Therefore, it's impossible to pass through 4S.

What am I doing wrong?

The NPC in 4S says different things if you approach him as different roles. One of these may provide a hint.
