Brained monsters consider themselves to have nine possible moves including "
Wait"
, and choose between them according to brained preference rules. Guards do the same, except that they rule out any move that would make their sword strike an explosive or ally.

×the guard has five possible moves: NE (4 moves from Beethro), W (6), S (6), Wait (5) and SE (5). He would choose the lowest-valued move, NE, but that's ruled out. Between Wait and SE, he prefers Wait because of his directional preferences (see the scrolls in Cerebral Testing Facility 1N1E).

×is that the guard is on the force arrow, which is a brain-visible obstacle (the pathmap treats it as a wall), so now the guard has only four possible moves and will prefer SE -- unless that's blocked by the second aumtlich.
