So, I've been playing Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and I did a double take when I got to a level called "An Uncharted Area: Wubba Ruins."

Yes, there are wubbas in Super Mario Bros.

Admittedly, they're not exactly like DROD wubbas, but they are round and squishy. I have to wonder if this is a coincidence or if the localizers chose the name as a deliberate homage.

It could be a case of "linguistic convergence". The word "wubba" just kind of sounds like something squishy and bouncy, doesn't it?

...But it would be kind of hilarious to hear about Nintendo being sued by a small independent developer like Caravel and winning.

Interesting that the wiki explains all the translations except English.

Ya, I think it's a total coincidence. I mean, isn't "Wubba" the perfect name for a little squishy thing like this, whether it be slimy or soft? It's likely based on the word "rubber". Still kinda funny though, I had a little chuckle of DROD remembrance when I first saw the name.

And if it IS a reference to DROD, why sue? It's a nice homage.

I've also been told that Elmo from Sesame Street is fond of the nonsense phrase "Wubba Wubba Wubba Woo."

I caught the Wubba reference right away, in an early game trailer.

It could definitely be a coincidence, but iirc, they also appear in a level filled with blobs of green gel.

That's two proximate coincidences, which is now a pattern!

And wubbas and gel babies both behave the same way... mind blown.
