Okay, so here's a case of "I understand what needs to happen, I just don't understand how it needs to happen". Here's what I'm getting so far:
The tar mother needs to grow three times before the projections close the large gate, and the main time-line has to be past the gate by then. This does mean, though, that the projections do need to be fully recorded by then. I'm mulling this over, but so far I can't really think of any errors I'm encountering.
My first thought was to try and set up the 1st projection so that the 2nd projection can get the 1st projection stuck for a brief time period, though that's not working out.

This room relies on a fairly standard by now time clone trick, but if you haven't encountered it before it can be fairly hard to wrap your head around. You're actually on the right path with your last statement.

Solved it at the less subtle point! I had noticed the extra space before posting, but I hadn't actually considered a use for it.
