Small question:

Why is the scroll size in DROD Linux one line shorter than the Windows version?

I must say though, the font look much better on the linux version, must be because of freetype.

Um. It is ? Damn. Both the Windows and Linux version are using SDL_ttf and Freetype for fonts, and font sizes are the same in both versions, so they should be identical...

Do you have any screenshots demonstrating this, so I can see how big the size difference is ?

I don't really know how to do it (certainly not in windows), but I tested this with my City of Queens hold. The scroll in the first room fits in Windows. But not on my Mandrake.

I can see if I can get a Mandrake screenshot using something, but it won't be today (as I'm too tired right now).

Here's a screenshot from both Windows and Linux (using the latest DROD:AE). The scroll to the left is from Linux and the one to the right is from Windows.

Edit: The commas and questionmarks seems to be the troublemakers.
Edit: But there seems to be some other problems as well.

Stefan,

Thanks a lot! This is exactly what I got as well.

Great game: Spot the 10 differences in that picture ;)

By the way, what program do you use to grab those screenshots?

I used the PrintScreen-button+MSPaint in Windows and KSnapshot in Linux (if I remember correctly). Then I combined the two with GIMP (it's also possible to take screenshots with GIMP).

I think we've found the reason for the discrepancy: differing versions of the font library. We'll post an AE patch sometime in the future, and the fonts should be more consistent.

Just a question to clarify:

How exactly will this be solved in the new version of AE (or JtRH)?

1) Is the scroll going to be longer?
2) Or will the beautiful linux rendering of the scroll be changed into the somewhat less beautiful windows version?
3) Or will I have to reduce my scroll text in a new version of my hold?

My guess will be 3), but this might affect other holds as well... If it is, should we put a warning against filling up the whole scroll in DROD:AE? (because you might miss a line in a later version of DROD).

Thank you for asking. As I understand, the font library for the Windows version of DROD will be updated to render fonts in the same way that the font is being rendered on the Linux version. So, scrolls will look like they do in the current Linux version. Updates might need to be made to scroll text filling up the scroll area in Windows DROD. (JtRH on Windows is also using this new font lib, so either way you'll get the pretty stuff.) To answer your question, I think you need to do #3.

Gerry, please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.
