Good question. Candle-light tended to make my photos blurry because the light flickered, so I just held a big flashlight on top and wedged it in place with a rolled-up pot holder. The orange glow is naturally from the pumpkin, and I just took the photo with no flash.

BTW: It's starting to get nasty already... the sword is twisted and shriveled, and the left-most hair spike fell off into the pumpkin.
