Well, the holds are in, and once again there are only two entries. For the second time today, this can only mean one thing:


DEATHMATCH!


Rabscuttle and jdyer, you two are facing off for first and second place. One of you will walk away with 100 points and an item from the DROD store (or JtRH), and the other will get 50 points and a hug from your mom. First one to send me a full set of demos for both holds wins first.

Also, just like in the first running, third place is up for grabs for the first person other than jdyer and Rabscuttle to submit a full set of victory demos. Doom, Sim and Agaricus may not win this, as they won prizes in the first running of the contest.

Erm, there's another mistake in mine. But the rooms are all completable.

You just can't leave level 3 because I am stupid and forget to remove walls.

Well, first and second places have been decided.

First place, for 100 points and an item from the DROD store (or JtRH): jdyer
Second place, for 50 points and a hug from mom: Rabscuttle
Third place, for 25 points and a nap: still up for grabs!

The first person to send me a full set of demos wins 25 points! Though Doom isn't allowed to win, because he's won enough already.

Additionally, jdyer submitted a full 12 room hold, so he gets an extra 5 for that. As far as I can tell, this is Rabscuttle's first contest, so he gets 10 for that. This means:

jdyer: 105
Rabscuttle: 60
Someone: 25

Edit: Is jdyer's Second Level, Once North doable? From experiments with a piece of paper, I'm not sure that it's possible to reach either of the roaches on the left without walking into a brain, and it's not possible to walk into a brain without one of them going off into a force arrow. (I tried the leftmost brain.)

Yep, I've beaten the hold.

Incidentally, I've been up for about 22 hours at this point in order to run this thing, and as much as I'd like to stay up to see it to its conclusion for third place I just really need to find my bed. I think it's in the room to my immediate left.

Here are the scorings as they stand now, and Matt I trust you to award third place for this second running:

First Running
Doom: 105 (full hold)
Sim: 55 (full hold)
Agaricus: 25

Second Running
jdyer: 105 (full hold)
Rabscuttle: 60 (first contest)
Stefan: 25 (judged and awarded by Matt C.)

So that's where it is, I'll revisit the forums again when I wake up. Thank you everyone who competed in both contests, and I'll see you all later.

Is Matt's hold L1-1N1W possible?

You need a mimic to get into lower left section but you need also a mimic to kill serpents in lower right section.

Should there be another mimic or am I missing something?

Heh, I realized the 'grab second potion' problem in my fourth room but forgot to fix it in my third. Don't worry, I'll bring it back to its evil self soon. Matt, remember the idea here is you use the invisibility potion to stop one spawn cycle. (It's a 'stopwatch', neh?) It's possible to kill most of the queens before they spawn even once.

I see how the 2nd room was broke too. Yerg. Stefan, Rabscuttle, could you send me your set of recordings so I can see what to mess with? I also know there's two rooms where brained queens get caught on things a little more easily than I intended.

I am proud to have whipped up a hold in, well, almost no time at all that can elicit comments like 'is this room possible?' :D

Ok, here's a 'fixed' version. Well, maybe fixed. Specifically, tweaks are at..

L1 1N -- fixed bug, maybe
L1 1N1W -- fixed invisibility problem, made slightly more evil

L2 1N -- just tweaked one bit to make it more puzzly
L2 1N1E -- queens shouldn't be so easy to catch now
L2 1E -- just a few more brains in the path

L3 Entrance -- more brains and queens, plays more like how I originally imagined (I couldn't make it too tough the first time because I still had to make a demo of the thing)
L3 1E -- also more stuff, queens shouldn't get caught up on removed red floors any more (although there are still places along the 'circle' and that is intentional)

I'm quite sure that L2-2N1W is not possible. You can do the trapdoor maze but you can't exit the room because of unbreakable tar blob blocking only exit.

You can break it only by walking into a dead end.

I completely agree with Doom. I've spent a reasonable amount of time looking for a way to break that corner, and it just doesn't exist.

And this after I've defeated all the other rooms on the level, too.

I second that. That room is indeed impossible.

If you remove the green door (if you don't remove the green door there will still be tar blobs blocking the south passage to the exit (you could remove the tar on your way through the maze, but then you would instead have tar babies preventing the green door from opening)) and make the tar SE of the mothers cuttable, it would be possible though.


You've also forgot to assign an orb to open the door to the trapdoors in L2:2N (which makes it impossible to get to 3N).

Also, were we planning on making a compilation hold at some point? I've got a few more tweaks to make before I declare mine Holds-section worthy.

So, how about a blast from the past? Just for kicks I started playing Matt's would-have-been-an-entry, today, and I was automatically restored to Level 2 2N1W, which is unsolvable due to the fact that the green door behind the Tar Mothers empties out onto a corner rather than an edge. Was this hold ever fixed, Matt?
