Quasar
Spending too much time on a spaceship can make anybody edgy. Can the crew of the Quasar nevertheless learn to cooperate?

A high-resolution adventure game in six rooms, the main point of the game is to explore the possibilities of having multiple characters. You can switch between four of the crew members that each have their own skill set, and their own reactions to hotspots and to other characters.
Well, you can't switch characters at the beginning, because the characters are angry at one another and you need to figure out how to make them not angry any more. Once you've done that, you can switch. The puzzles in here shouldn't be too hard, it's mostly about exploring the different reactions.



Full release, v1.0. Feedback, suggestions, and bug reports welcome.

A voice pack is under construction. Furthermore, we're looking for translators for the game; feel free to apply in this thread here.

All right, I just tried it and I couldn't even get it to work. First off, when I try to start the game it plays music for a LONG time with absolutely NOTHING on my screen. I have to bring up the Start menu in order to get it to stop and go to the main menu. And even when the main menu's up, I can't find my cursor or anything.

That's interesting. What system are you running it on? Do you have the same issue playing other games written in AGS (such as Warthogs from our site)? Have you tried running the winsetup program that accompanies Quasar, to e.g. change it from full-screen to windowed?

Well I only just bought my computer a few months ago (my old one stopped working). I had downloaded ATOTK but I hadn't actually played it. I just tried to open it and I had a similar problem - the poem at the beginning stayed on my screen until I brought up the Start menu, then I could see my cursor on the main menu but I couldn't move it.

So I guess it's something to do with my computer. I have Windows 7 (64-bit). Is there any sort of patch or something that can fix this (I LOVE ATOTK - I wanna play it on my comp!).

I would recommend asking on the AGS forums (AGS, or Adventure Game Studio, is the tool used to create ATOTK and Quasar).

Yes, I did. I looked through it and was wondering on how to solve one problem, but I figure out I might as well post it here.

Polish has declension and so things like Use $1 with $2 are problematic.

For example:
chipcard, car
insert [chipcard] into [car]

In polish it would be:
Karta z chipem, Samochód
Włóż Kartę z chipem do Samochodu

I could leave the basic forms intact, but it is going to sound really artifical:
Włóż Karta z chipem do Samochód
The weirdness of this sentence could be compared to something like:
He say he be hunger.

One other way would be to wrap them into parentheses:
Włóż (Karta z chipem) do: Samochód

And that is the best I could do - unless you have a support for declension it is not possible to do it any better, but I can translate it like that if you want.

Hm, that's a good point. Unfortunately that's going to be rather hard to support.

However, note that lines like "recorder,point %s at" will always use "recorder" as the value for "%s", so that solves half your problem. You'll still end up with "point recorder at $2", though, but there's not a whole lot of lines affected there.

Do you need different declinations for "look at $2" and "point recorder at $2"?

There are seven declension cases (though I don't think the seventh would be used) in Polish and ideally I could specify them in a list for each item/person, like:

book
książka,książki,książce,książke,ksiązką,książce

Numbered 1-7

And I could use it like this:
Połóż %4 na %3 (Place on)
Rzuć %5 w %4 (Throw at)
Rozmawiaj o %6 (Talk about)

So I think it is either support all or support none, funky Polish :).

Okay, how about we start without declination support, and see how that looks? I may be able to hack something together. This is only for the header lines, anyway, so it doesn't affect the majority of the game.

I wonder how other adventure games handle this?

That's an interesting problem. I can think of three solutions:

1. Partially open source for translators, so that they can modify the code in order to add declension.
2. Text engine which by default support declension
3. They somehow workaround, but I can't really think how.

But sure, I can try to translate it to make it read as naturally as possible, I can't say when I will have the file ready though.
