I don't think so. In the Webfoot version, the minimap didn't show tar, so you could see the walls under the tar and therefore (for this room) where the trapdoor was, located by a small gap in the minimap. In that case, locating it was relatively easy.
When we went to 1.5/1.6, this feature was lost. This probably was not noticed (most of the alpha testers had already finished DROD) and so I think the problem was caused accidentally and not realised.
