Seconded. I'd do a lot for a part in a commercial release, especially one as good as JtRH.

Well, if you really want to hear Erik's voice, you can always download his career debut song "The Whistler". It's like music, only better! :D

And as for voices, the JtRH article did mention that Todd Downing is lending his voice for this fun task.

Correction: Todd's not doing the voices, he's organising the voice recordings in association with Erik. We'll have actual actors doing the voices.

Not out-of-work actors, either. Actors who can act! It's pretty professional, and Erik's not going to accept cheesy voice acting. (We're not allowed to record any voices for that reason, because we'd all have cars in the background and things. Might be an easter egg, though.)

I agree with what Matt said, except Todd is doing some of the voices, in addition to organizing the whole thing.

So who determines how much the bar moves, anyway? Is there a list of things that are left to do that are each worth a certain percentage, so that when they get done the bar moves a pre-determined amount? Or is it on the whim of somebody who just says, "Well, I guess we're about .10% farther along than the last time we adjusted the bar."

From all the times that I've been online when the bar changes, Mike R. is the one who's alway's been on at the same time. Makes sense, though. He is the head coder.

Ok, I'll buy that. But that still leaves the question of how he decides when and how far to move it...

A lot of factors could probably contribute to it:

-A tester finishes the hold
-Voice acting gets submitted
-A known bug gets fixed
-A graphic file gets done
-A new feature gets coded in, etc.
-A new level/room is added.

I'm just wondering if he's guestimating it as he goes along, like "Ok, we just got that bug fixed, so I guess I'll bump the bar by.... Ummmm.... I guess .25% sounds about right", or if he's got a list of things left to do that he's assigned particular percentages to, like:

Get voice acting recorded: .25% for each of X number of recordings
Known Bug #1: .1%
Known Bug #2: .25% (Harder bug to fix than Bug #1)
Finished graphic for opening screen: .15%
Tester finishes JTRH: .1% for each of X number of testers

and so on, where he's crossing things off as they get completed, and bumping the bar accordingly...

My guess is, since 90% is such a big milestone, they're waiting for something specific to happen before raising it to 90 or beyond. Lets hope something happens soon though.. (and not just another 0.001% increase because of this and the previous post!)

It happens that every single tester came down with Cholera at the exact same time, so there has simply been no progress made for the last three weeks. When we've all recovered, you'll see the bar move.

The progress towards the end will be slower. There were certain conditions set before the final release, and the bar is tracking how many conditions were met. By this time, most of the obvious one were met, and only the most difficult remain. So we are mainly waiting for stuff like hell freezing over, Bush's assassination, world peace, justice for all, robo-maid in every house and porn-free internet. Those may take some time to achieve, so don't hold your breath.

As I understand it, porn-free internet would be great. Pornography seems to be one of the prime components of the moral decay of our society. That means it makes bad things happen for everyone in general, and I'm categorically against such phenomena. Of course it didn't evolve in a vacuum. If nothing else, it is a catalyst leaving broken families and broken hearts in its wake like nothing else. The downfall of all great societies was preceded by a similar all-encompassing moral decay. The prospective future scares me in a lot of ways. [/soapbox]

As regards the bar...we've had a recent loss of critical data. It's being resolved, but it's been holding up the show. Still, the show must go on, and other things are being worked on as opportunity permits.

Whenever people talk about moral decay, I like to mention that women have more rights now than ever before, ordinary people take care to ensure enviromental sustainability, more and more drugs that were considered acceptable are increasingly unacceptable and the ruling class are more accountable now than ever before. But then, I've kind of adopted the shorthand of "moral decay" meaning "falling religious followers".

I can't help but think that pornography will have its day in the sun as the vice of the moment, and then people will notice that porno models are kinda icky and get all uncomfortable about objectifying that. It'll come, though.

(I figure the rise of porno came with the demand for women to be not treated as sex objects, as an outlet for men incapable of doing that 24/7. As this is a relatively new thing, I figure that eventually this drive will be curtailed, either by biological or social means, much better than it currently is, which seems to be a confusion that men seem to need an outlet in the first place.)

Matt

This is growing rapidly off-topic, but I should point out that there's nothing inherent about pornography that objectifies women, at least any more than it objectifies men. A lot of porn that's out there is very demeaning to women, but the same is true of mainstream entertainment.

I'd say we need to fight for better, more enlightened pornography rather than fight against pornography.

If anyone wants to continue this debate we should move it to the anything forum.

It may have been mentioned before, I can't remember, but progress is going a little slow at the moment, since there's been a data loss problem with the speech files, so Erik has to try to sort it out before we can move to the next testing phase.

The bar will be slow for a while, but when the problem is fixed, it should start shooting up again, since we'll all be itching to get on with the testing.

I don't like that. Then the next improvement would be 0.115%, and then 0.135%.
