*examines the statistics* You are.... just before me and and I'm after RedHawk? Wow! I'm finally a demigod(albiet a minor one; I wasn't involved in betatesting 1.5, 1.6 or any of that good stuff). If I bring you a bagel will you bring me a muffin?

And when did non-DRODer beta start? It's October now and the bar started hovering around the beginning of September, so it's fairly obvious that there's been testing during that time. How long does the first phase of beta last?

Well, I can't tell you how long it'll be for DROD, but I can tell you how long it takes for an MMORPG and you can draw your own conclusions:

Alpha: 3 months. Find the major bugs
Closed Beta: 3 months. Invite some friends over and find the minor bugs
Open Beta: 6 months. Stress test. Push the servers to the limit.

My DROD analogies for these:

Alpha: Designers test the game to make sure everything actually works. AI functions as it's supposed to, graphics load properly... the proprietary stuff.
Closed Beta: Find the people who've never played before, see how it works for them. Fix playability issues.
Open Beta: Find people who've played the original DROD and let them go at it, checking out the monster interactions and the usability of the editor. Test the editor, push the game, poke Beethro with a stick... everything they can do to break the game.

So while I'm not part of what is, in my analogy, the Closed Beta stage of testing, that's how I think it'll play out.

Well, it has only advanced about 4 or 5 percent in the last two months, maybe testing has been going on for 2 months already and we just don't know it.

MMOGs are more complicated games than DROD is, so testing won't take nearly as long. Plus we gave it a good testing while it was being built - there's nothing like eating your own dogfood to find showstoppers.

("Eating your own dogfood" is programmer parlance for using your own product as an enduser would. It's called that because you usually find out your product's not quite as good as you expected, although most of DROD's icky dogfood bit was in the AE release.)

Well, if the number up there was in hexadecimal form, then we would be at 129%. However, if it was the other way 'round, it would be 51.8 in hexadecimal. The "yarr" just has fun factor, though.

Anyway, I dont want to rush you but you might want to hurry the beta a little. I'm sure Onieromancer, DiMono, RedHawk, Trick and Clayton are rearing to test it. I know I am but I'm prolly not on the "To Beta" list, mostly 'cos I'm a newcomer and I didn't really beta anything else.

In fact the only good thing about me is that I am in the Hall of Smitemasters(one of the newer ones, in fact) and if you included everyone who either A: really really really wanted to be in the beta or B: was in the hall, it'd be a really big and hard to organize thing, so that's right out.

Where was I?

Oh yeah. We're all really interested in what you're planning, and I want your address to plant some bu-uh, I mean, send you cool stuff. Yeah, that's it.

Personally, I don't really care about if I get to beta it or not. I've got myself a free copy, and that makes me a "consemer" who, when the game is released, has to power to shake their fists at the testers because they didn't find a very obvious bug. Good show, good show!

As for beta testers, my guess are: Oneiromancer, DiMono, agaricus5, eytanz, ClaytonW, and possibly NoahT.

They're slowing it down apurpose..... This is just cruel. If they're they're beta-ing then there's a working engine. My guess is that they want to finish the big hold first, so we can buy when we get it. See my Paranoid thread in the Anything board for less details.
