I like the Skelwing best, I think. In general, though, I don't think I can name either set as better.

I know what you mean.

I think the enemies in subterra look better than in subterra 2 but the ones in subterra 2 give the game a different feel because of the humanoid ones.

Functionally, they are both pretty interesting. I like the more bestial look of ST1 monsters, though.

I have to admit, I like them both. At first I really did not like the monster set from ST2 as much as the one from ST1, but now that I think about it, it's good that the two are so different. Each monster brings something interesting to the game. Although, I do think that demons are a little over used.

I view the demons as cryo birds from the first game. Functionally, they can both be used to interact with the environment (birds by activating things, demons by pushing things).

Yea
slimes and spiders - warriors
seekers - knights
skelwings - sorcerers
Poltergeists and cryo bird - demons
Firedrake - golem

Faeries are the only new ones as far as i can see.

The others move in a similar way but do diffrent things
for example the golem leave behind dirt wherever it goes whereas the firedrake would leave behind a 3 x 3 square of rocks when it died. Knights are a bit different form seekers because they follow in your footsteps rather than take the quickest route to you like a seeker. A poltergeist is similar to a demon because if you trap it it creates a gem.

a direct line isn't necessarily the fastest way to you, especially if something is in the way. :)

completely true. Ok seekers always go to you in a straight line.

I don't think I would quite agree with these correlations.

Classifying them based on movement pattern:
Wall-followers: slimeys (turn to gems in glue), spiders (drop nine diamonds), warriors (turn around when you speak)
Circlers: Cryobird (grabs tools, activates things, swims), Firedrake (destroys things, goes through fire), Golems (leaves dirt behind), Sorcerers (conjure stuff)
Move until blocked: Skelwings (drop stuff), Poltergeists (I think)
Unpredictable: Faeries (drop stuff, turn to dirt in traps, swim)
Follow player: Seekers (also attracted to lights), Knights (follow footsteps?)
Back and forth: Demons

The skelwing-sorcerer correlation also works because they both insert any objects into the level, though in vastly different ways. A correlation between firedrake/demon or cryobird/demon can also work, since they destroy, activate, or push things, respectively.

I don't think the firedrake correlates to the golem very well, apart from the movement pattern.

I disagree with your classification.

Faeries and skelwings both follow predetermined paths through the level. So they're both either "unpredictable" or "moves until blocked".

Well when i was comparing them i wasn't comparing them only by movement patterns or the way they act. I was comparing them on the thing which i thought was most important.E.g Poltergeists and demons do not move in the same way but they both leave a gem when they are trapped.

No, they follow quite different movement patterns. The skelwing moves forward until blocked, at which point it chooses a direction and continues onward in the new direction. In other words, it never turns unless it is blocked by something. The faerie, however, moves only a few steps (four or so) before choosing a new direction. In other words, it will turn without hitting something.

They do have in common that they are unpredictable, though. I only classified the faerie move pattern as "unpredictable" because I'm not quite sure what it is, plus I couldn't think of a better name.

Yes, that's true, though it's harder to trap a poltergeist than a demon, and less dangerous. ;)

I voted ST2, but that's probably just because I use it more.

It's sort of hard to compare them, as ST2 monsters are much more compact.
For instance:
Golems lay dirt, can walk over water, move slowly leave gems a death, explode into dirt.

Sorcerers can summon, move irregularly, can move through lasers, leave an explosion of magic field.

Faeries can fly over water, explode weird, fly randomly.

Basically, ST2 is a different game, believe it or not. :D

Also, I would say that daemons are the most used for their simplicity, or to put it another way, their lack of uses. :)
