Question about Cave Story

I finished the game - escaped the island.
It seems you can play the game longer, but the red cave (last cave) is painful, really. Even if I use level3 machine gun exploit to no end.

Do I miss much if I don't play any longer ? And how long until next save point ?

Ah, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Did you save Curly?
Did you find the Spur and the Serpent weapons (hint: you cannot find them if you have the machine gun)
Did you find the Booster v2.0 (rather than the v0.8)

If you did that, you get the Final Cave Hidden, rather than the regular one, which is REALLY a pain (and you get to do it all by jetpack, mind you). Plus you get two additional bosses - Ma Pignon and the Red Demon.

If you did all that, AND defeated the Undead Core (preferably without using the Life Pot since you'll need it later) you can enter the small makeshift building outside when the island is falling apart. It contains the last save point, and the entrance to the last level, which is quite literally Hell.

Argh, Cave Story freezes up my entire computer for some reason.
