Of course I am sure. I live in Australia after all. I just had to look at the clock not do any calculations. :)

If we weren't in time, will he send an e-mail telling us? Or will he just not respond?

Does anyone know how many spots are left?

Matt's in charge of all that, so only he can tell you who's included in the beta. He should make an announcement about it soon enough. You guys just gotta be patient.

Ah the heck with, it I'll call, but if this is an "aardvarkian embassy" sort of thing I'm gunna give you a VERY rude emoticon.

Edit: I am clueless as to how to dial Australia. http://kropla.com/dialcode.htm lists +61 as australia... How come?

Strange... I dialed 011 for international, then 0431 and the rest. That didn't work, so I dialled 01161 for international, then 0431 and the rest. That didn't work either, so I dialled 01161 and then the rest without the 0431. I got some "thank you for calling, we are sorry to delay your call, please hold and a representative will be on the line" thing that stood by indefinitely. Is this supposed to happen?

Right, after 20 straight hours of intensive DRODding with no sleep, my skilled (unlucky?) eye has found the following (hope you don't mind me posting this all publicly, please don't hurt me):

In the editor, if you place a Weevle next to a serpent, you can lay a Cobra over top of it.

There's a slight graphical bug that rears its ugly head on Dugandy Level 4, where the pit and the stairs think they line up with each other.

Why can I set up title screen demos for Rooted Hold?

Why can't I save death demos for Rooted Hold?

The Flow doesn't interact properly with pit that's only 1 square wide; it continues expanding across the pit. Is that intentional?

I like how pageup and pagedown let you go through levels when editing a room, but when I pagedown from the bottom of Dugandy, it takes me to the beginning of Rooted Hold instead of back to the top of Dugandy.

The sound file for waking up the Dreadeyes is pitched too high.

The new layout for the build screen is nice, but I'd like to see the new editing permission option without having to scroll.

And finally... you forgot to include an orb in JtRH level 6 3N1W, you can't open the door to get to the potion.

Speaking of April Fools, head over to newgrounds.com (if you have been there sometime in the past 3+ years)... Theres something funny down there.

Edit: Good prank there Erik, I did one today at my buddies house where I put wax paper in his freezer. BUT there is a short story behind it, my friends mom bakes ALOT and she uses wax paper to cover all her baking up..

Edit again: Good God! Theres covers! in the picture! (it's not that hard to reconize them)

Although Australia's country code is +61, Erik's basement is indeed 12.

Sorry guys, I had other things to do today. Let me see here... we have a few spots still left, after I upped the amount of testers we had from 15 to 25. As has been mentioned, it's a masterpiece of graphics and sound.

DiMono was just being evil and throwing mirages at you to make the Beta appear more real than at first. It was quite convincing though.

I find it amusing how some of the features the dev team explicitly said were not in 1.7 have been included in the above list.

*coughAPRILFOOLSJOKEcough*

Seriously though, anyone who fell for this has the intelligence of a common dust mote. I don't care how dedicated to DROD you are, there's nothing that could make you overlook both the craziness of the announcement and the date on which it was made. My only regret is that I could not join in on DiMono's illusion-weaving before the majority of the forum populace actually woke up from their beta-induced stupor and realized it was a joke. ;)

Well - for a brief second the fact that lots of people were taken in almost caused me to consider it, but then I looked at the - to be honest - dodgy screenshot, the bizarre features list, the fact that Erik said Matt was in charge (of the game he invented? - unlikely) and various other things.

Admittedly it was a lot better than last years DRODIS joke. It even beats the spaghetti trees.

Sokko... you seem to have a gift for starting flamewars. Really, there were quite a few people that fell for this joke. If it's a beta, anything could be in that would be cut.

Are you a pyro, perchance?

And don't make me say the R word.

Please, everyone, lets not get upset about this - it was a joke, some people saw that, others didn't, that's the way these things go and doesn't really say anything about either group.

I've got to admit that I really didn't like this joke - it was unnecessarily cruel, building people's hopes up in a way that was really not needed for it to work - if the 1.7 stuff was presented as a preview with no mention of a beta, it would probably have been more effective, and no-one would build up hopes only to have them crushed. April Fools jokes should make the people who fell for them laugh when they realized that, not feel disappointed and upset.

Yes, it was a somewhat cruel joke.
But think of it as a sort of satire. On the 1st of April, I actually thought, "I wonder what the forum will do for an April Fool's joke today? I know, they'll announce a Rooted Hold beta." And I know for certain that some of the people who fell for it are actually very intelligent. Sometimes, as with satire, a cruel joke is just what you need.
Admittedly, if I were in charge I would have gone for something a bit more absurd, a bit less predictable and a bit less what people were hoping for - something like "DRODCon 2004 being held on the Moon with first showing of DROD 1.7 and Rooted Hold" - but I'm quite surprised at the tempers and (unjustified) moddings-down that this joke has raised.

However, a suprising proportion of the forum populace fell for it, including a lot of people I thought would have given pause.

The thing is, the thing is, is that a fair few people thought it might be an April Fool's joke and wandered right into it anyway. Those people weren't that upset because they at least were cautious. People like DiMono and RoboBob saw the funny side and helped out, further adding to the fun. It was only those people who stopped paying attention as soon as they found out we were offering a 'beta' who ended up being upset, and they probably needed something to stop themselves taking it so seriously.

Erik and I did discuss, after the fact, that people are going to be quite disappointed about this (although I did try to be a bit obvious), hence the little easter eggs I promised people for being such good sports (comparitively - I expected an angry mob outside my door). At least, unlike the DRODIS joke, people will get the real version eventually.

And Sokko, the reason we stopped it so early was that it started to spread. There were people referencing the joke in other threads, so if it had gone on much longer (and it did go on longer than it really should have) it would have been too cruel.

Eytan, I think one of the key things to this joke was the e-mail address. I didn't handle it as well as I would have liked (ideally I would have been there through the entire thing, firing e-mails back to people as soon as they sent me one, and letting them down gently which I only worked out a couple of e-mails in) but at least those people who did get their e-mails as soon as they sent them in didn't spend a whole night getting all excited about the beta, and didn't have enough time to salivate. I honestly have no idea how I would have done that if it was a preview, and the damage may have been worse because speculation would have fired up anew, which is hardly what I wanted.

For all those people who did send e-mail addresses and salivated while I slept, sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. I forgot about the sleep bit.

Matt

No, in fact, you're a little early, since DROD 1.7 isn't quite finished yet. :)

I believe it will be a closed beta, since it is a commercial product, so I'm not sure who will be doing the beta testing when it starts.

I guess this is the danger of having such an April's Fool's joke: months later the thread gets bumped and everybody starts salivating again.

Sorry, everyone :blush, and please resume breathing.
