Please help. I can't figure out how to get strong enough to kill the swordsman. I thought may-be I need to go onto level 6 and come back later but I think the exit to level six is after getting through the swordsman.

Perhaps I wasn't strong enough coming into this level? So far I have killed all the monsters on the previous 4 levels. May-be I should have saved something for this level? I'm just not sure at this point.

Most probably, yes.

Try killing as few monsters as possible; if you can walk around it don't even think about killing it until you can kill it without it fighting back.

As I said earlier in another post, I had several thousand hitpoints when fighting the pirate while he only caused 750 damage - all by racking up hitpoints (by avoiding unneccessary fights) and attack gems.

Doesn't the NPC suggest not fighting this guy until you have the attack to kill him in one hit? Is that even possible? I feel like I picked up all the gems before this point and was still 16 attack shy.

I am getting real frustrated with this level. Please help. Based on previous post I know I think that is what I am missing to get through this level.

Are we talking about the same room/level? I didn't see a pirate. Just a green goblin talking about greckles and how he would get mine after "I be sliced & diced". Also no mimic that I can see, just my handy pet roach.

Anyways, if we are talking about the same level I am totaly confused. If not we could still use some guidence.

Wait a second, guys - the pirate captain is Rule 6. He's asking about the first swordsman you find - the guys with really big swords and 650 ATK. There's an NPC who hints you should be able to kill them in one hit before you go near them. Personally I wasn't able to instakill the first one, but you should make it a priority to get 158 ATK after that. (Is instakilling the first one possible, by the way?)

I've re-done the whole game and have 140something attack
but seem to need 150 to kill the swordsman in one go.
I have many thousands of hit points, so I guess I'll just
live with the damage. Have I really missed multiple ATK
boosts somewhere?

Well, going ahead has allowed me to see the rest of level
5 and (I think) all of level 6. Is there some trick like
atk boosters from level 1 being worth more if you go to level
4 then go back up to get them? If not, then I must have
missed an awful lot of stuff somehow. There's some evidence
that I don't notice crumbly walls very well, so I guess I'll
go and try chopping every bit of wall in the game.

Ok, hacking every piece of wall is a bit extreme, but with practice you'll get used to spotting crumbly walls.

No, there's no bonus for leaving attack till later.

I have started the game from scratch several times. Is it really
possible to get ATK 150 before killing the swordsman? If so,
I've missed a lot of stuff and can't see where it can be.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it is possible to get 150 ATK before fighting the first swordsman. When you fight him, it's going to hurt you a lot.

But you can get 150 ATK before fighting a second swordsman.

You just have to take the 600 damage. It's completely impossible to have 150 ATK by then.
