Is there anywhere where I can see what the latest news on Journey to rooted hold is? Last time I heard about it was before AE even came out, and I know absolutely nothing about it. OK, so probably not many of you do either, but you'll know more than me. Is it still going to cost? Any ideas about when it will be released? etc etc?

It's a deliberate tactic. The details haven't been finalised, is all.

Howeever, what I do know is that the official hold, as well as new music and graphics, will cost. But the program itself won't, so you can play user holds for free, I think they've decided.

Matt

Well, you can get a little stuff on the "Spying on Caravel" thread, and under the "Upcoming" tab, which may or may not be true.

News JUST IN: JtRH will involve a man, with a sword, killing things. This man may be Beethro Budkin, but we reserve the right to fake screenshots until we reveal upon release that the main character is actually a white-haired 20-year-old pretty boy.

To answer your other question (release dates), no dates have been set for anything.

Or maybe....not! :lol
White-haired pretty boy kills things with big sword. Maybe this is the (not) rumoured multiplayer option!

I don't see it on the Upcoming tab. Is it hidden?

Go to "Upcoming" then to "Unconfirmed New Dungeon Elements". There's also a bit more background in Erik's third story "Beethro Hears the Universal Song"

On a little side note, since I don't want to start a new topic: will we have to pay for the new music, or will it be a part of the main DROD?

Yes.

All new music created for DROD by Emmett for Caravel will be commercial, so this will also have to be paid for. Any non-Caravel music or pre-1.7 music that is still around is free, although there are still some legal gray areas over the 1.5 music.

I don't think we know that. We only have a few vague hints about random things, best documented on the "Spying on Caravel" thread.

Did you mean sound effects?

If so, then I'm sure that someone will also make some new ones, although I think that any of those will also be commercially copyrighted.

If you did mean music, then the music will come with the game when you buy it, although the structure of the music will be reactive instead of conventional, so it will get a little more complicated than it is now.

Sorry, this isn't accurate--some music will be free. And I don't care to say much about it now, because things change and all that.

Oh, well, I just inferred from what was implied. I don't really know what's going on behind the door very much, so I'm sorry if I made the mistake of saying too much when in fact I know very little.

Will there be unique sounds for monsters in JtRH?

Depends. All the new monsters will have new sounds, but they'll all be variations of the soundbyte 'Steve'.

On a serious note, this has not been finalised. There's actually very little we can tell you with any sort of surety.

It's eating you up, isn't it?

Being the original Spy on Caravel, I can authoritatively give everyone the following facts:
JtRH will have 50 levels, of which 12 take place outside Rooted Hold itself.
The plot involves - stuff. And lots of it.
Ketchup and puppies are an easter egg.

Beethro is also a dude.
The Raygun's in it, but you have to input a highly obscure button sequence to get to it.
Thank you for your attention.

Ooh, almost Contra, right? Or was that Gradius? Some Konami game, at least.

Game on,

Thought you'd know this one, Neil - it's the Konami code, which they used in most of their games, naturally modified for DROD. Though I think it went A B Select Start, which means there should be an F6 in there somewhere.

If I recall correctly, it was Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A B A Select Stard

I also remember in one of the Star Trek GameBoy games, the secret code was Down Up Left A Right Down, which is a misspelling of Dullard

I was going to say "Just about any game released on any platform in the 80s and early 90s". :P Seems like every one of them has some form of secret button-pushing code that begins with pressing each directional button the same number of times.

Just so you know, it's actually going to be 100. With 25 rooms each level. And....Schik is going to write most of them. Yeah. That's it.
