Hi.

Some more ideas:

Bear Trap/Iron Jaws - works like that nasty metal trap used to catch animals by breaking their legs (metal jaws).
When Beethro steps into it, he dies. When a monster steps into it, it's stuck until killed. Standing on a square adjacent to catched monster is safe, but bumping into it - not.
Snakes simply ignore bear traps (alternative: they trample it, and it's destroyed).
Should goblins be dumb enough to fall for it ?

Electric Trap
Basically, every third creature (including Beethro) that steps into it, is killed. So it works like that: safe, safe, ZAP, safe, safe, ZAP.
The trap changes color/appearance so it's always possible to say if it's safe to step into it.
Waiting on the trap is dangerous, because it counts like entering it again.

Tombstone
Tombstones are best left alone. Each tombstone is inhabited by evil spirit. If Beethro steps into Tombstone, he's killed. Beethro can destroy tombstone with his sword, but it's not needed to finish the room.
Monster stepping into Tombstone destroys it, but becomes possessed by the spirit. So it permamently has its intelligence upgraded (like a brained monster).

More to come.

Some good ideas. I don't like the idea of Beethro getting killed by anything other than a monster (or mimic), but that's just me Maybe he could go "ooh" like for a pit when you try to move into a beartrap or tombstone? After all, if he's too experienced to fall in pits, he should be too experienced to be caught in obvious traps.
Standing on a square adjacent to catched monster is safe, but bumping into it - not.
This is incompatible with the turn system of DROD. All monsters move after Beethro has moved, so waiting on (or moving onto) an adjacent square to a monster has exactly the same effect as bumping against it in any situation. It's just the same as bumping into a wall.
The Electric Trap is my favourite of the three ideas.
For the Tombstone: I don't think that monsters having their "intelligence upgraded" is a good idea. How would you know which monsters have been upgraded and which haven't?

Yeah, there's kind of a "no auto-braining" rule around here. Aside from that, the electric trap kinda seems... off, with relation to DROD. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but "counting" the number of times you step on a tile doesn't seem to be a DROD activity.

Of course I could be wrong. It's just my view of things.

Well, technically this isn't "auto-braining" - it's a differnet way to get brained, but it's tied to interaction between two room elements rather than a monster that's brained by default.

That said, I agree with Masonjason that it's a bad idea to have brained and unbrained monsters of the same type mixing in the same room.

I think a monster in a Bear Trap should also be killed. However, we could have another trap that holds monsters in one spot.

I believe they're called "Force Arrows" ;)

Yes, but force arrows allow monsters to escape in 5 directions.

Not if you use 4 of them, or walls, or pits, or crumbly walls.

How would one place 4 force arrows, without the help of walls, to trap a monster?

Any way that blocks them, and have the sword in the fifth spot? I got nothing.

But that takes up a lot of squares, and Beethro would have to approach from the opposite direction of the force arrow.
